For the fun factor, go with a 10/22...lots of parts, totally reliable, light to carry, shoots every brand of ammo I've put into it perfectly. The cost is not very high when you think about what you're getting. If you like to have to file down parts of your gun straight out of the box and have mags stick and have the feel of a cheap Chinese-made kids toy, they go with a Mossberg.
Although my favourite .22 is the BSA Martini...a bit more money if you can find one in good shape.
Totally reliable, I think not! Why would there be do many people posting issues with there 10/22 then?
