.22 for self-defense...?

.22 too small......unless your being assaulted by bunny rabbits, squirrels and such.

40 S&W x 9 is just right....

As I understand things, even have a base ball bat handy is considered premeditated in CA and unjustified by the courts.

Honestly, i would probably choose a 22. It might not do as much damage or have the same stopping power, but the point of self defence is to stop the threat, not kill your attacker. You also would not have to worry about over penetration.

I might be wrong, but if your threat is not up to kill you, don't shoot at all...if your threat is out to kill you, then killing your attacker will stop the threat. In a life or dead situation you don't have the time to calculate whether to kill or not. You kill or get killed.Quick decisions under a high stress level usually vary from the ones sitting relaxed in front of the screen and punching the keyboard.YMMV

Hypothetically speaking, if it was legal to carry, a .22 handgun would be better than nothing perhaps, but certainly not my first choice.
If the situation was dire enough that I would need to actually draw a gun I would want something with some more, you said it! "energy"
Also, .22 being a rimfire is not reliable enough to bet your life on, centerfire is more reliable generally speaking. You would also need critical hits to guarantee stopping the bad guy quickly, a larger caliber that hits harder will penetrate further and do the damage. Shot placement is vital either way but a 9mm or .40 etc will still give you a lot more wiggle room, not to mention they will just deliver much more energy and expansion with hollow points. A .22 may or may not penetrate a thick jacket with enough force to actually stop the guy at all.
Just my 2 cents

Theres another side. 22lr is low recoil and easy to shoot and be accurate with, much easier to hit what your aiming at, so head shots would be relatively easy. Take some CCI high velocity mini mag hollow points and it will do the trick. Plus it looked cool in "Assassins" lol

Actually... You're NOT gonna shoot someone in your house in Canada... Bad guys have too much rights here and YOU gonna go to jail. Handguns here are only for shooting range fun. I would use a baseball bat, metal bar/telescopic stick or even a shotgun with rubber slug long before using my handguns... You don't want to kill someone, your job is to "control" the bad guy until the cops arrive. I think (and it's my personnal opinion) that martial arts are the best self-defense method available here... Im not talking about air roundhouse kick in the face... But a good armlock technique is really effective (to control a single opponnent at least). Okay you could be attacked by more than one person but you think shooting everybody is the solution? We can't use taser here but i think it would be an effective weapon for home defense. So forget about any handgun caliber for home defense/self defense... Just enjoy your handgun at the range and if one day someone break into your home and you're gonna use your handgun for self-defense... You gonna grab something you trust in your safe, and im pretty sure youre not gonna take that (insert 22lr pistol brand here)...

an armlock wont help you if the intruder is armed with a gun.
