.22 groups at 100 yards

With the right shooter & gun/ammo....

I've never got anywhere close to 1" @ 100 yds. with any ammo, in any .22 rimfire that I've ever owned including the much beloved Savage Mk.2 BV heavy barrel. How you guys are doing it is beyond me.
I have an old ES350b .22 Mauser, on it is mounted a Weaver Microtrac T10 scope.
Silverback using his last batch of PMC Moderator rimfire ammo, & my Mauser, shot a 3/4 inch, 5 shot group at 100 yards from a bench on a calm day. (I bet you Ben has done similar shooting with his small frame Martinis)
I dated the target & gave it to him. He still has it.
What truly rangles me, is that since the move back out west, I have yet to relocate that Mauser`s bolt!!

Not with factory ammo it won't, we're talking accurate .22s here, Steve Garbi a very accomplished shooter has on many occasions, offered this same observation in his writings. He has used the .22 for offhand 200 yd. target competition,(on calm days). Either of my old Martinis outshot my Tikka Varmint .222 both with factory ammo, one of the Martinis has a Unertl scope on it and the other has peep sights, the Tikka used a 30X scope.

What sort of real world comparison allows sorting through types and lots of target ammo for .22s, but not handloads for centerfires? It's safe to assume the those seeking accuracy would do both, with rimfires because they have to, with centerfires because they can.
BTW, which day do you expect the wind to quit blowing on?

Sure, but sort through available "Factory" centerfire ammo and choose the best. In the rimfire world, you have to shoot what is available loaded by the factories. I would have no issue in a comparison with a centerfire so long as handloads were excluded [FWIW, I shoot a lot of centerfire 22 as well, including a very accurate 222] With handlosds, one can actually "tailor" the load to an individual rifle, something you cannot do with the rimfire. As for wind, I don't know where you live, but here, we still have some windless days, and early AM often gives us a clam 1-2 hours to shoot rimfire in. Otherwise, you learn to read the wind and shoot accordingly. I won a 100 meter benchrest match on a day that was breezy, with gusts to 15 mph. My group average? .697" for 5 - 10 shot groups. Lots of sighters fired, but good scores still possible. Regards, Eagleye.

Over 40 years ago I put a Shilen heavy 8 inch barrel (left over from a .222 rifle I barreled) on a Ruger Mark I and a 2.6 power scope. I shot hundreds of gophers with that out to 100 yards quite regularly.

When I shot it on paper at 100 yards with high speed hollow points it usually shot a little over an inch, less than an inch and a half. It is long gone now but I often wondered what it would have done with good ammo.

My CZ452 out of the box with ELEY match shoots in the .6 - .7 range at 100 (5 shot group). At 50 it can do .25 or so. It opens way up with the gopher splatter bullets though.

And if handloads weren't excluded, what would you expect the results to be? Putting man made restrictions on the comparison is unrealistic, esp when handloading is standard practice.
I've been to the range twice this morning before putting the coffee on. There was no wind, but there were no gophers or matches either.:D I've tried wakeing rodents up to shoot them, with little success. Barring that, I have to shoot in the conditions as they come.

I like an accurate .22 as much as the next guy. I've had a couple Anschutz that would cluster match ammo around the inch mark.Still have one. I've also rebarrelled .22 centerfires that would only do the inch. I bet you have too.

Brutus, I'm calling "unfair" here, your Martini is using factory loads and your .222 is using handloads, what about the Martini vs .222 with factory loads???
You're right though about the Martini being a tackdriver, if they were made today, the same as before, they would charge $2000 for them, but you can buy them used for $300!!

You wouldn't happen to know of a good Martini for sale?

How good can you get with a .22LR is a question I have been trying to answer myself. I must admit I get no-where near 0.5 moa at 100 yards, but I have only been working on this for a couple of months. The rifle I have is a Ruger 77-22 action on a Lilja heavy bbl and a pillar bedded Richards microfit stock.

So far this is the best I can get with Lapua ammo, this is my best for 20, 10 round groups shot over about a month period, mostly with a 2-5km wind.

I have not gone to a bbl tuner as yet, just trying to learn this game..

Roberti11..you are measuring your groups like they do in benchrest, either IBS, or NBRSA, the ctrs. of the two furthest apart holes, here on gunnutz, groups are measured similarly but rounded down to the nearest 1/2" for ease of scoring. As an example, if your group measures .99 in IBS, here it is rounded down and you have yourself a 1/2" group!!

Ben I like your sense of humour.:D

Very nice rifle Robert.

That looks like range 3 at Sharon Gun Club, hope to see you & the Ruger there some day.:)

Yes it is range 3, I hope to get out this saturday and join the range 4 club and shoot at 200M, I just competed my range 4 qualifications!

Looking forward to trying out my Cooper LVT@ 100 yards. No problem matching the test target at 50 yards with Tenex and Midas along with a Weaver T-36X for glass.

Biggest problem I have is finding a calm day out here on the prairies, going to have to get up ealier in the morning I guess.

I was thinking the same thing. Hope to get out saturday myself, maybe we'll do some shooting together.

Interested in taking a closer look at that rifle Roberti, looks very cool!
