22 hornet .223 or .224

It really makes no difference, just run .224 bullets regardless. Most hornets manufactured in/for North America these days are .224. Some of the European hornets are still .223. Of the 3 hornets I've owned all shot .224 bullets well and one older one was a Brno fox that may very well have been .223. It liked flat base 50 gn .224 sierras best.

I've heard that older hornets shoot 223 and that's what I'm loading for my Brno. I haven't shot it yet, though. I've heard that new hornets like Rugers and Brownings shoot the 224s well.

Thanks I bought a few boxes of .224 bullets and a few boxes of factory loads to try. Just need to find time to reload and get out and see what the Browning likes.

Browning never made a gun to shoot 223 bullets, as most older hornets were manufactured with 22 rimfire barrels, so 223 bullets were fitting in these guns, but new manufactured guns all have 224 bores nowaday. The older BRNO 465 have good luck with both 223 and 224 bullets, the Savage 340's work best with 224 diam. bullets in the 3 I have owned over the years. A friend had a original Win 1885 lowall, and it one shot well with 223 diam bullets also_One thing you won't hurt your Browning hornet using up 223 bullets if you have a large source anyway. The hornet is the most fussy about powder type and weight of anything I have ever loaded, but one of the nicest shooting centre fire guns I own. I now have 3 hornet in my working battery, and everyone likes a different powder and overall loaded length to get best accuracy, good luck and have fun, cheers Dale Z!

Thanks for the replies. I almost bought a box of Hornady 45 gr. hornet bullets in .223, then noticed the box next to them were .224 hp/Bee at $5.00 a box cheaper! I guess supply and demand kicked in here. Not as much demand for .223 bullets, or maybe the BEE bullets arn't selling. Also bought Hornady 40 gr. VMax bullets, one box of Horn. 35 gr. VMax (factory load ) and a box of factory REM. 45 gr. psp. If any of you know of a good bullet for the Hornet, please let me know. Thanks

No personal experience but 40gr vmax seems popular, but some guns don't have long enough magazines to feed them when seated to the longer COL they require, as the ogive to tip length is pretty long with these bullets.

The one Powder I was not able to make work in my guns was Little gun, but others have had great success!
On my Brno combo gun, 22hornet/12ga the bore diametre is .224, but the newer CZ 527 is 223? Go figure! Dale Z!
