x2, actually I was not real impressed with my 799 at first, the action was very rough, and trigger was poor as well as the mag would not stay in place, but the bluing is better than most prod rifles and found the trigger easy to adjust, the mag problem was a relatively easy fix and some polishing smoothed up the action, it is the most accurate hornet I have owned by far, better than the #3, 77, and Brno's I have had, with 5 shots groups consistently in .5" with 2400 and 40 gr Ballistic Tips. Its topped with a M8 6AO compact and is definately the most used rifle around the property for critter control due to the quiet report. Would not be without one.

I own an old savage 340 series e in 22 hornet, recently bored out to k hornet. I have taken several deer, my first even (230 lbs 16 point) with my hornet. as a commercial fisherman i have taken many seals with this weapon. typically at 75 to 100 yards . doesn't sound like much until you factor in both the target and the shooter are moving( from a boat) and not in sync !!
In short this is an often overlooked and under utilized cartridge. I feel it has fallen prey to magnumitis.
If you shoot factory, a word of warning !! hornets are fussy!! mine shoots .5 to .375 with remingtons 55 grain, throw in a winchester and it spreads out to about inch. however if i sight in with wins she'll tighten back up... then switch bach to the remmys and she'll throw them an inch wider!! I 've never tried the hornadys tho i suspect they would be a good choice.
I had an h&r hornet in break barrel and she shot fine. not a competition rifle but a good "hunting accuracy" gun 1.5- 3 inch groups at 200

In reply to the fellows question "was there an 22 hornet hangun" yes it was built in relitively small numbers and are worth a fortune in Canada. The company was called J.Kimball Arms Co. in Detroit Michigan and only 300 of these semi auto handguns were made and I think 90% of production was in 30 carbine with the hornet making up the last 10%. they came in 2 models(Combat Model & Target Model) and were manufactured only in 1958. The price for the 30 carbine is around $1K and the hornet will do an easy $3K. I have been searching for 7 years since I learned of this manufacturer. Most models are found in pristean condition as they were very hard on the shooter as barrell lengths were 3" for the combat model and 5" for the target model, just some good trivia for you gunnutz guys and gals, regards Dale in T-Bay
 
I had a Hornwet rifle and liked it, nothing fancy just an H&R Topper. I played around with lots of different powders before I found 4227 worked best. I tried heavier bullets without success, and settled on 45 gr Hornadys and Sierras. I don't think I ever got it to shoot moa, but it came close, and was always within 1.5. I don't think I would go that route again, unless I came across a gem of a rifle like an older Brno Fox, its too easy to get a modern cartridge like a .222 to shoot well.
 
As Boomer said, there are lots of modern rounds that will beat the hornet.
I still like my K hornet ruger, but it has been a labour of love rather than just a practical fix.
I don't know of another cartridge that will basically double what a .22 magnum will do with very little more noise. If I had wanted a .222 I would have bought one, my k hornet has a role to fill and it does it. It just depends on what your needs are.

The Ruger 77 22H is based on the rimfire action which isn't he greatest IMO. I have one that shoots ok but would sell it in a heartbeat and buy a CZ or Cooper except for one little problem, thats the rifle my GF used to shoot her first gopher and she would be pissed if I sold it. It is a pretty capable and handy ranch rifle.
 
I own a larger cal Ruger and would prefer a CZ527 hands down. A bit more expensive but that MiniMauser is a sweet ride. I checked the website an my CZ527 223 weighs exactly the same as my CZ452 22lr (5.4lbs) so it is a real nice carry. Real eye candy too. They put together a very nice rifle. Makes my 77mk II look a bit rough.
 
I have a BRNO with double set triggers in 22 Hornet, ugly rifle, but one h*ll of a shooter. Groundhogs are in big trouble out to 200 yds. Mine likes 35 gr Hornavy Vmax and a case full of IMR 4227. As previously said great in semi urban area because of low noise.
 
One of the coolest little rifles I've ever seen was a .17 K Hornet on a small action Martini. By the way I agree completely, if you are shooting where it is important to use a rifle with a small blast signature, the Hornet is a top cartridge.
