.22 Hornet Decision Time, Please Help Me Out.

I would have no intention converting into a K hornet. Its a tough choice. I saw that CZ .221 Fireball posted in this forum and I have to agree. The CZ is a damn pretty rifle. Imagine the Prestige model

well, if it weren't for my bad ears i'd probably get a fireball (or 204 ruger for that matter). nice thing about the hornet though is its mild report, good for when you don't want to draw too much attention to yourself i suppose ;)

i prefer the lux model just because of the european styling. nice thing about the hornet is the economy of loading shells. close to 700 shots to the can of powder if my math is anywhere near correct.

That is exactly one of the reasons I want to get a Hornet as my first centerfire rifle. Cheap to reload.

I have sensitive ears and really enjoy shooting a cartridge that doesn't wake the dead.

O.K I think I am getting it. So its not the magazine that is an issue it is the rifle itself?
Both...some rifles will have a long enough throat that you run out of room in the mag when seating the bullets too far out of the case...
Sometimes when seating (as is the case with my 260) the bullet contacts the lands before it becomes too long for the mag box....make sense ?

Absolutely right and you'll find reloading is the same price as 22 wmr with better wallop. I was going thru this same issue last year and being the cheap skate that I am, chose a 12FV in .223. Now I have a coyote/badger gun and God's gift to gophers with reduced loads using Blue-dot powder, same noise and performance as the Hornet. Good luck with your purchase.

I have heard some bad things regarding accuracy. Not true?

You tell me:

as for ruger's having poor accuracy, i understand its a hit or a miss. some good/some bad. apparently you can shim the action if you are having problems. i wonder what that new 799 remington out of zastava will be like?

I'm itching to try mine out again. The factory bedding is terrible, there's probably .05" of play between the action and stock. I bedded it this winter for zero slop and floated the barrel; I hope that'll reduce the flyers I start getting as the barrel heats up

get the CZ 527 but get the 221 Fireball...I replaced my Hornet with a Fireball two years ago and haven't regretting it a bit.....it's a better case design and does just a bit more velocity with about 2 more grains of the same powder. I used 13grs of LilGun in the Hornet with a 40 grainer and 15 grains in the Fireball...

hornet

I just bought a browning on EE and very much like the looks & feel. Have not shot it. I also have a Ruger #3. The single shot is always fun I can seat the bullets out in it. The bruno I had had a short mag. & I could not get them as long as I would have liked. I have buds with the Savage & the 77hornet,I will not be getting one as they are both unhappy (77 is not very accurate & the Savage is off & on with the same load. ie; good 1 day not the next) good luck:wave:

22 Hornet

Open up your walet and buy an Anshutz, ten years from now you will double your money and have a rifle that in most cases are tack drivers.

Funny this thread came back from the dead. I just got grubby little paws on a few hundred pounds of lead. I just thought how sweet it would be to melt it into an almost infinite supply of .22 hollow points and pick up a Hornet for s#its and giggles. Crap, I could shoot that thing all day long for just pennies at a time! :runaway:

Well, this might be an old thread, but I am an old fart. :p And something us old farts like is to shoot the breeze................

I had several rifles chambered for .22 Hornet, including two Model 43 Deluxe Winchesters, a Ruger #3, a Ruger #1, and a Ruger 77/22H.

The 77 never could put the bullets into a decent group, and the fellow who got it from me figured he could somehow make it do so. It didn't.

The Ruger #1 did not get an honest chance, it came and went too quickly.

The Ruger #3 I owned twice, after I swapped it away I pined for it and bought it back for more money that I had sold it to the fellow. It was the most accurate of the bunch.

Both of the M43s were lovely rifles, and both shot very well. The triggers on them were delightful. If I had decided to stay in the .22 Hornet game I would have kept the M43. BUT I really disliked loading this cartridge, it is fiddly as hell, and I found that I would collapse about one shoulder out of seven or eight that I was loading, which is a PITA. I had a nice Remington 700 Classic in .221 Fireball, which shoots extremely well, and so I let the last .22H go to a good home alomng with all of the dies, brass, bullets etc etc etc.

In other words, I suggest somebody looking at buying a .22 Hornet take Rembo's advice and buy a .221 Fireball instead. ;)

.22 hornet ??

yeras ago I had a Savage model 340 K in .22 hornet , it was uglier than sin , but did it shoot great groups , had a straight 6X scope on it and after some fine tuning with a handload I shooting groundhogs at a little under 200 yards . I regret selling it , I now have a Remington model 700 ADL ( 1973 vintage ) in .222 , it is a tack driver , and has more range than the hornet ,but if I had a chance to get that old Savage back , I may not be able to help myself ....later Joe
