.22 Hornet Decision Time, Please Help Me Out.

Seems to me NEF makes a single shot and I might pick one up for the fun of it. My main varminter is a Ruger No 1 223 so I dont really need one but it looks like a fun calibre. Or a Savage o/u rifle shotgun combo would be cool too. The Ruger No 1 tidied up its accuracy with the addition of a Hicks Accurizer. Virtually invisible and allows you to decide how much to float the forestock. Now I really want to see what she will do with handloads. Pretty classy rifle though. Gets lots of looks at the range. Big fun to shoot-I always wanted a falling block.:)

So - after a year - what have you settled on?

Well, I decided to blow my Hornet spendings on a nice custom walnut stock for my Ruger 10/22 Magnum. The Hornet is still going to be the next rifle I will purchase but for the amount that I current shoot, rimfires fit the bill.

I have an old CZ twin set triggers and it is a thing of beauty, and shoots as good as it looks. Howeaver you cant beat the #1 the short length is often very handy. One issue with teh hornet is the thin small brass makes it a pain to load

I had a nice Sako 72 or 74 can't remember that was the old .223 bore[.2225"] and it was glass bedded. One day it was a one holer the next pie plate sized groups.Got rid of it.Had a Sav 24D same bore same problems.Yes I was using the correct bullets and various powders. Dumped that one too.A CZ or better yet older BRNO would be my choice.Figure a 10gr load so 700 rds per lb of powder.Win 296 was best. The Ruger has a tighter twist than the regular 1-16" normally used and has accuracy problems[G+A review]For pounding around a cheap H+R SS would be fine. This can be a frustrating cartridge to reload and get consistancy...............................Utilitarian/Economical.......................Harold

Or find a used Browning Low Wall for real class.

Don't you just love how we can add different options after you have tried to narrow things down. Life would be too simple otherwise.

I see we have a new dealer here, with a nice Cooper. I'm catching myself eyeing my collection to see what I can sell off to afford it

I have an older BRNO zkw 465 in 22 Hornet. It has been opened to the K-Hornet configuration. Even with it's short barrel, it does very well, and shooting factory Hornet ammo to fireform cases, will stay under 1" at 100 meters. With Hodgdon's Lil'Gun, it performs very well indeed, and I see no need to change anything. BTW, It has a 6x36 Leupold on top, and that seems just right for this little varminter. Regards, Eagleye.

I also saw that he has a number of Coopers. Hmmm, a nice Cooper in 22 K Hornet. Those Cooper test targets are awesome. (Yes, I know they are only 3 shot, etc, for those who like to quibble.)

Get the CZ, but get it in 221 Fireball...the Fireball is what the Hornet could have been had it stayed in school....:D..It has a modern case design and actually feeds in the CZ...the Hornets rarely feed as well...and yes, I've had them both. Still have the Fireball.

I Have the Ruger 77/22H......rugers's seem to be a bit iffy if you read up,but i must have a good one as its shoots 1/4 to 1/2 inch at 100yds everytime with reloads, good enough for a fat old Groundhog!.

I have a Ruger 77/22WMR with the Laminate Stock and Stainless action/barrel. I have owned a number of 22 WMR rifles over the years, and none comes close to this one in accuracy, not even a CZ 452 I had.
As for the Hornet, I have a BRNO ZKW465. It has been opened to the K-Hornet configuration. It is scary accurate, and very pleasant to shoot. Even fireforming factory ammo will give 10-shot groups under 1" at 100 meters. I do not shoot my hornet much, but is is a lot of inexpensive fun when I do. I recommend a #1 Ruger. Eagleye.

O.K I think I am getting it. So its not the magazine that is an issue it is the rifle itself?

It may be the twist of the barrel that sets the limit on bullets you can use in a Hornet. My old Brno will shoot 40 grain as a maximum. Same type of bullet in 45 grain opens up to between two and three inches at 100 metres. And a hollow point Barnes of 36 grains, which is actually longer than a standard 45 grain, makes a good pattern for geese at 100 metres.
The 40 grainers will stay in one inch, if I don't wobble it.

No matter what Hornet I bought, I would have it converted to the K-Hornet quickly, run...don't walk....the new case design takes care of any of the old accuracy issues that the Hornet is famous for esp. long sloping shoulder.

A 22 HNT in a #1 can be hard to find. We've managed to pick up a few here and there but they are usually spoken for long before they get here.

LOL. I can't believe this thread was found.
I have not got a Hornet yet. I think after I initially started this thread I spent my $$$ on a custom stock for my 10/22 Magnum, then bought an Anschutz 1712 .22 LR, got rid of my 10/22 Magnum all together to get an Anschutz 1717 HB .17 HMR.

Then..... purchase a Henry Golden Boy Deluxe Engraved .22 LR, sold the Anschutz 1717 and now I am awaiting a Cooper Custom Classic .17 HMR with a butt load of upgrades and a custom stock for my Anschutz 1712.

So no, no Hornet yet. But when I do, Cooper wasn't on my original list, now it is and it will be another Custom Classic with all the bells and whistles again.

LOL. I can't believe someone resurected this thread.:D:D
