is the .22 Hornet dying?

seems like i am seeing ammo for it in catalogues or on shelves a lot less, and few guns are chambered for it from the factory these days. a shame, it was on 'the list' of guns i wanted to get in the near future.

anyone care to speculate on the future of this cartridge, or just share their thoughts on it in general?

Hornady, Federal, Winchester, and Remignton all make ammo...H&R, Remington, CZ, Browning, Ruger, and probably others chamber new rifles

yeah, it's done for! :ninja:

It is the "gold standard" small game round in Europe. Even if it actually was no longer manufactured here it would be going strong in Europe. I doubt it is in any danger of dying in North America though. I shoot a nice little Anschutz that I wouldn't give up.

Like many cartrides it's popularity goes up & down. It's a good round & will be here for a long time. It's bigest draw back is affordable factory ammo, pretty much have to reload. Can't see me not having one . AJ

Savage makes a nice one too with the accu-trigger, I believe. I priced it over the internet and they are going for $500.00 and change. My local dealer wanted $800.00 for the same rig. Great to be Canadian eh? The Savage rifle is supposed to be super accurate. Does anybody here have one that they could give us the poop on? I have a single shot Savage in 22 hornet. Great little cartridge.

back at Christmas time I almost bought a Remington 799 chambered in it...great feeling and great looks from it. Here is a pic of it off of Remingtons Site.
Remington799.jpg

From what I have read it is made by SPARTAN GUNWORKS for Remington
And here are Model 799™ Features again from there site.
Short-Action "Mini-Mauser" design
Sako/AR-15 style extractor

Sporter style 2-position safety

Solid steel hinged floorplate magazine (22 Hornet utilizes a 5-round detachable magazine box)

20" clean barrel

Drilled & tapped for scope mounts

I think I am leaning towards this one or the Browning.

Really, if you look over the last 25 years, the 22 hornet allmost seems to have been limited in its factory rifle chamberings, but its never taken away from its popularity. the hornet is like the 45-70, its too niche to go away.
I'd assume that there will always be a demand for it. Its like the 222 also. very limited in its factory chamberings, but you allmost allways see it on the shelves even at Cdn tire. There are alot of guys out there that dont live and die by internet, and current gun fashion ;) Which is why rounds like the 30-30, 45-70, 22hornet, and even that Bob:) will never die.

the .22 hornet is a nice quiet round- I certainly see it lasting a long time. It's a bit more challenging to reload because of the small case. There even is a .223 to .22 hornet reducing insert. My M6 Scout has the rifle barrel in .22 hornet and its great for the rabbit and grouse that the .410 can't reach.

how well do the inserts work? whats the deal with the .22 hornet being listed as both a .223 and .224 diameter bullet?

i honestly have no idea why im so interested in the Hornet. its outperformed by just about every modern centerfire round, and ammo is much more expensive than the .223.

the .22LR easily trumps it in both quietness/recoil/noise and ammo cost, and the .223 beats it in effectiveness and ammo cost.... so i dont really have a 'valid reason' for getting one - i cant explain it, i just do. it just has some wierd appeal to me as an interesting bridge between the .22LR and .223. would be nice to put together a small, lightweight single shot like an H&R in it and set it up as a super low-recoil, relatively quiet gun i can loan to new shooters that combines some of the best properties of a rimfire and centerfire.

yeah. broken down its still $15-17 for a box of ammo though, for which you can buy .22-250, .243, etc. and almost 40 rounds of .223 .45gr JHPs :(

the .17 Ackley Hornet also looks very interesting, although it doesnt sound like a simple build... are there any less expensive ways to put one together than a full custom build? anyone have one?
