I finally sat down to load up some ammunition for my Anschutz 54 in 22 Hornet.I tried some 40gr v-max,and some 40gr ballistic tip,with mixed results.The v-max chamber easily,but they were too long to fit the magazine,if anywhere near the lands.I ended up loading them longer,and snipping off the end of the nylon tip about .060" to fit the magazine.The 40gr ballistic tips would not chamber easily even when seated very deeply into the case,so I gave up on them.I am starting out with Lil Gun powder.Now I just need time to get to the range and do some shooting.

My universal load for 6 differnet hornets I shoot, 12.6 grains Lil'Gun, Federal Small pistol primer and a 40 grain Sieera Blitzking. I seat them as far out as I can whille stil fitting the magazine. Have never had a gun that would not shoot this load well under and inch at 100 yards.

It looks like you are loading to 1.81" for that rifle,the Anschutz will only allow approx 1.74" COL.I loaded the 40gr v-max to 1.81" to 1.84" before trimming the tips for a COL of 1.74".It is very easy to trim the tips,so if they shoot,it isn't a big deal.
With the Browning those fit in the magazine. With my Anschutz 1.74 was max length too. I would never trim the tips off, so I just loaded them at 1.74. I did shoot some 1.81s in it by loading single shot but didn't see any real difference in groups. The Anny wiould shoot just under 1/2" at 100 yards with the 1.74 length, same load.
I didn't like the looks with the 40gr v-max seated to 1.74",so I decided to trim the tips.The way that I see it,the only effect caused by trimming the nylon tip,would be a very slight loss of B.C.For a 250 yard cartridge,I doubt that there would be much effect.The difference in weight after trimming was less than .1 grain.The BC of the 35gr v-max is very low,so I will give the 40gr vmax a try.If it doesn't work out,I will try other bullets.I will keep the Blitzking in mind.

sierra make a nice 45 gr hornet bullet that is very blunt and hits the lands sooner than some more pointed bullets. I have the same OAL problems with my ruger.

You don't mention which primers you are trying? I tried 3 this spring, CCI smr,older Win 6 1/2, and small pistol. They all gave minute of dead gopher, but on paper at the range the pistol primers gave me my best groups, I was using the 35gr Hornady. Although the bc is low on this bullet and a lot of fellows don't care for it , it still kills vermin real well in my CZ. FS
My new .218 Mashburn Bee likes H-4198 best of all, different cart. that holds more powder, but the CPA falling block action lets me load bullets way out and into the rifling for best accuracy, cast or J-word bullets. A rifle that doesn't allow proper bullet seating depth is a non-starter for me.

My Anschutz likes the 35 gr. Hornady and 45 gr. Sierra bullets with lil gun.

I have just acquired dies, brass and bullets (Sierra 45gr. in .223) and will begin with 2400 as I have some on hand
(plus it was the powder originally developed for the Hornet).

StuartI just returned from the range after load testing,and it appears that my load development is done.When seated .040" off the lands groups were around 1",but as the bullets were seated closer to the lands the groups shrank.At .010" from the lands,the five shot group at 100 yards was .475".This was using Remington cases,12.5 grains of Lil Gun,CCI BR4 primers,and the 40gr V-MAX.The bullet tips were trimmed to produce a COL of 1.740".It may certainly be possible to achieve even tighter groups,but sub 1/2 moa is good enough for me,especially when considering the crosswind that was present,and the fact that I was using a 3-9 scope.
