Ive started looking around for a 22 Hornet, Im looking for more of utility varminter/camp gun...nothing too pretty, used is fine too. Is NEF still making a single shot in 22 hornet ? Available in Canada ? Any feedback good or bad is appreciated. Other than that I found the Savage walking varminter .

NEF hasn't exsisted for 6 years... The company amalgamated under H&R 1871... Yes, they still make the Hornet... I bought one from Epps a few months ago... They are out of stock now but have some on back order... Keep checking. I have reamed all of mine to K-Hornet and love them... Within their niche they are almost a perfect gun... Cheap to load for and components are readily available.I have a friend who has a Savage 25 in Hornet with the laminated thumbhole stock... Nice gun.

If i may suggest, try to go with europeen rifles. they seem to have master the art of hornet. further, if you have a good gunsmith near you, ask him to rechamber to K-hornet. It will give you that small edge over stock hornet. The down side is that you will have to reload for that one. But still i love hornet and there is ammo available. IMO CZ has the top spot as for hornet rifles.
Good luck.

Yeah, I reload for all my rifles, dont' need more performance than the standard hornet (unless there are a lot of other advantages). A nice mag fed bolt gun would be nice but not looking for another 900$ rifle, Ill keep my eyes open for an H&R but the Savage with Accutrigger is interesting as Im sure the H&R wont' be pleasant to pull on. thanks guys.

A DIY trigger job takes care of the trigger... I have done all my Handi's... You can get instructions on YouTube or Graybeard's...

I picked up a handi in 22 hornet about 3 weeks ago from magnum gun outfitters in lloyminster alberta, I also sent it to be reamed to k hornet more for extending brass life than the extra powder capacity.

Re- loudness? I had a Ruger revolver in 22 mag not surprisingly with a 6 inch barrel it had quite a crack to it sound wise. Also had a model 43 Winchester 22 hornet with a 24" tube it was very quiet for a centre fire. If you shot it without hearing protection it wouldn't rock your world kind of quiet.

Picked up a early 50's Savage 342 in 22 hornet in a package deal from a retired hunter. Was just gonna refinish the stock and clean her up over the winter as a mini project, then sell her on the EE.
Now listening to all you fellas with Hornet love, I might just keep her. A neighbour has invited me and my brother to go coyote hunting, the old savage should fit the bill, aaaannd I'll have yet another caliber to reload for. Lol

Have we talked about this before Salty?

I used to live where you are now and my father had a Winchester Model 43 22 Hornet. I still have it. Another guy there had one too, the deluxe model with checkering. Don't know if he still has it.
