the old guy I knew used a hornet to shoot deer up in the Sooke Lake watershed 40 years ago-they fenced the new plantations and the deer would get in there when the fence was down , so John MacDonald [the gatekeeper-anybody remember the ''Sooke lake coffee shop''?]would either try to run them out-or failing that shoot them.He must have shot hundreds of deer with a hornet
I traded into a Savage 340 series E last year from another great guy & CGN dude, and I can't believe how accurate the rifle is...
At 100 yards, with the two varieties of factory ammunition (that I've tried so far) it just keeps cutting ragged holes into the target; time after time.
What a wonderful rifle it is! And all this with a "side mounted" scope.
I would like to get a Savage model 40 "varmint" single shot BA eventually...or perhaps a Ruger 77/22 Hornet but I'll bet I don't find one that shoots any better than this one does. The only real concern I have with the Savage 340 is that I'm afraid I'll bump the scope against something whilst hunting, and knock it out of whack because the side mount is only attached to the rifle on one side.
FWIW, there are not too many Ruger 77/22s out there that give hole in hole accuracy. I have only known of one, and as far as I know Rembo is keeping it! ;-)
The Savage 340s (and Stevens 325s/same gun) are generally very accurate rifles, even though they may be somewhat deficient in the "looks" department..... Beauty is as beauty does!
I have a hornet in model 43 and it shoots very good with 45 gr hornet from Hornady. (I found the .223 diameter kept the pressure down versus the regular .224 diameter from othe manufacturers.) Seating the bullet for this older firearm must be done carefully as magazine is a bit short for seating way out there. I use H4227 with great results. If I were you, I'd get one of the CZ's as they are very accurate and strong action for reloading.
4 rabbits and two coyotes have fallen this winter and they dropped instantly. Range from 50 yards to 125 yards. Last summer the ground squirrels were excellent targets out to 125 yards. Not much noise in a populated area: somewhere between a .22 RF and .22 RF Magnum. When you reload, its cheaper than a .22 RF Magnum or .17 RF and a heck of a lot more fun!
I have a Browning 1885 LoWall in .22 Hornet that is an absolute hoot to shoot. Ground squirrels out to 200 yards is not unreasonable. Its gets kind of hard to hit them beyond that. I like it because it is quiet with negligible recoil. I can be shooting it a hundred yards from the house, and no one in the house can hear me. Obviously that goes for the neighbours as well.
