TUUSULA, Finland - An 18-year-old student opened fire in a Finnish high school Wednesday, killing seven students and the principal before turning the gun on himself, police said.

The teenager, who was not identified, shot himself in the head but survived for a time. He died at Toolo Hospital, chief doctor Eero Hirvensalo said.

The attack at Jokela High School in Tuusula, some 50 kilometres north of the capital, Helsinki, shocked the Nordic country, where gun ownership is fairly common by European standards but deadly shootings are rare.

Finnish media reported that in 1989, a 14-year-old boy shot and killed two students, apparently for teasing him.

Police said at a news conference after Wednesday's attack that the gunman shot the victims - five boys, two girls and the female principal - with a .22-calibre pistol. About a dozen other people were injured as they tried to escape the school, police said.

"He was from an ordinary family," police chief Matti Tohkanen said about the gunman, who belonged to a gun club and got a licence for the pistol Oct. 19. He did not have a previous criminal record, he said.

Finnish media said the shooter revealed his plans in a YouTube posting before the attack.

The video, titled "Jokela High School Massacre," showed a picture of a building by a lake that appeared to be the high school, along with two photos of a young man holding a handgun. The person who posted the video was identified in the user profile as an 18-year-old man from Finland. The posting was later removed.

The profile contained a text calling for a "revolution against the system."

Another YouTube video clip showed a young man clad in a dark jacket loading a clip into a handgun and firing several shots at an apple placed on the ground in a forested area. He smiled and waved to the camera at the end of the clip.

A third clip showed photos of what appeared to be same man posing with a gun and wearing a T-shirt with the text "Humanity is overrated."

Police said they would investigate any possible connection the gunman might have had to the video.

Terhi Vayrynen, 17, a student at the school told The Associated Press that her brother Henri Vayrynen, 13, and his classmates had witnessed the shooting of the principal outside the school through the classroom window.

She said the gunman then came into Henri Vayrynen's class shouting: "Revolution! Smash everything!"

When no one did anything, he shot the TV and the windows of the class room but did not fire at the students. The he ran out and down the corridor, Terhi Vayrynen said.

Kim Kiuru, a teacher at the school, said the principal announced over the public address system just before noon that all students should remain in their classrooms.

"After that I saw the gunman running with what appeared to be a small-calibre handgun in his hand through the doors toward me after which I escaped to the corridor downstairs and ran in the opposite direction," Kiuru told reporters.

Kiuru said he saw a woman's body as he fled the building.

"Then my pupils shouted at me out of the windows to ask what they should do and I told them to jump out of the windows ... and all my pupils were saved," Kiuru said.

More than 400 students, from 12 to 18, were enrolled at Jokela, officials said.

Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen described the situation as "extremely tragic," and declared Thursday a day of national mourning with flags to be flown half-mast.

A .22LR can be very deadly in close quarters...why wouldn't it be? At the cabin, I have seen 40 gr HP .22LR regularly go through fence posts at 20 yards...a human body is nothing compared to that.

I thought I read/heard somewhere that more people in the world are killed with a .22 than any other caliber. Whether that refers to all .22's (including the .223) or not, I'm not sure.

All firearms are dangerous, thats why we should be thankful that so few idiots get their hands on them.

How you can actually wack 8 ppl using .22? That must be some kind of mistake.

I don't understand why you think it's incomprehensible? Potentially, he could have killed a maximum of ten people with each magazine. If you shoot someone multiple times with a .22LR, chances are you will eventually hit vital organs or major blood vessels and mortaly wound the person.

I've been shot with an air-soft pellet in the head and it drew blood. Needless to say, I'm still here, but if it would have been a direct hit to the eye, I probably would have lost vision.

While an Airsoft probably isn't ever going to kill you, a mag of 20 pellets through a pellet gun might, should they be strategically placed.

There was a guy in Calgary about a year ago that was shot 6 times with a .22 handgun, I think 4 of those were in a leg and he died.

bottom line, .22 is deadly.

One of the three leading causes for combat casualties is blood loss. A small "in and out" wound may do little damage to tissue, you might not even lose any mobility. You lose 2 pints of blood and you're in serious trouble. 3 pints, and you're probably going home in a bag. If you can destroy the CNS, the respiratory or the circulatory system, you die. On a side note, I wonder how many victims of Columbine actually bled out rather than died as a direct result of being shot??

TDC

ETA: Oh yeah, this kind of crap(shootings) is a great reminder why everyone should carry first aid supplies as well as more serious kit when they go to the range or even in the car. Blood loss is blood loss, too much is a very bad thing.

Consider that a Walther P-22 was used in the Virginia Tech shootings - and that it caused considerable damage there.

Semi-related note: the brain-children at the Globe and Mail said the Walther fired ".22 long-range" ammunition; yet another group who haven't figured out what LR stands for...

The saw somethere that said that the .22 is quite deadly since when it enters the torso it will deflect off ribs, spines etc and cause all kinds of internal damage.

all we use on the farm to put down hogs and steers is a 22LR. a 1000 lb+ steer will drop instantly with a 38gHP to the brain. lots of deer in these parts have certainly been put in the freezer with a 22LR as well. recently a group of idiots here were charged with killing 3 endangered mainland moose with a 22LR. shot placement as always is most critical. do not underestamate the 22.

wasnt the .22 pistol with subsonics a favorite weapon of mob hitmen? its enough to penetrate the skull but not exit, and bounce around inside the skull. its also relatively quiet even without a silencer (ie: it wont be heard from outside a house).
you dont need a .44 magnum to kill someone.

A big factor in the death rate at shootings isn't so much caliber as it is speed of medical response. At Dawson, the police stopped the shooter pretty much immediately, and the school is minutes away from the best trauma center in the province. Only one person out of twenty shot died.

People can bleed to death from a .22 wound, and if there are delays in dealing with the shooter, delays in getting ambulances onscene, not enough EMTs to go around, a long drive to the ER, etc, their odds of surviving decrease.

And ferchrissakes, .22's are FIREARMS! Just because they're not very powerful doesn't mean they aren't lethal. There's a difference between ethical for hunting purposes and lethality. Just because I won't take a .22 deer hunting doesn't mean a deer shot through the heart with one won't die eventually. It'll just die more slowly than if it were shot with an adequate round.

Thats what my firearm instructor said. He also said rimfire's only purpose was for killing humans and that a .17 rimfire would be illegal. After that I never really listened to anything non-safety related he said...

Yeah, for sure .22 is lethal, but it’s not that powerfull as larger calibers and you have to place a right shot in vital organs, head or heart for example, and it need to be for sure multiple shots. I hardly can imagine how you can put this shots right into vital organs when everyone is running. Larger calibers have more stopping power even if missed vital organ person will be knocked out of their feet for example and you can finish the job, but with .22….really hard to imagine, and yes you can whack 8 ppl with .22 if they immobilized, like tied up to a chair or something but not running and kicking, I’m pretty sure press is misreporting the caliber of firearm, it’s not .22 caliber. On a picture on yahoo it looks more like berretta and definitely it’s not the .22 caliber.
