Hey all.

I have a Kriss Vector .22 SBR. It had a collapsible AR styled stock on it. Is there any concession in the firearms act to allow .22’s to be shorter than 660mm? Can I put a folding stock on this fun little gun? Or would that bring it under the OAL required by the act?

Thanks

Short answer, no. Not without turning it into a restricted firearm, anyway.

FWIW, the definitions for non-restricted, restricted and prohibited firearms are in the Criminal Code, not the Firearms Act.

From the CC, Section 3:

restricted firearm means

  • (a) a handgun that is not a prohibited firearm,
  • (b) a firearm that
    • (i) is not a prohibited firearm,
    • (ii) has a barrel less than 470 mm in length, and
    • (iii) is capable of discharging centre-fire ammunition in a semi-automatic manner,
  • (c) a firearm that is designed or adapted to be fired when reduced to a length of less than 660 mm by folding, telescoping or otherwise, or
  • (d) a firearm of any other kind that is prescribed to be a restricted firearm; (arme à feu à autorisation restreinte)

Technically, it can fold to less than 660mm as long as it cannot be fired in that configuration, but that is not the majority of guns with a folding stock. Adding a folding stock to your rifle would make it into a restricted firearm, with the attendant registration and use limitations that implies.
