22 Long Rifle at 500 Yards

I tried to get you interested 3 or 4 years ago. I said:

in here:

But you didn't reply in any way or didn't see it
(or maybe it was because you were hating me even back then).

Anyway, it is great that people started
to get interested in the 22LR at long range.

Don't dislike you in the least. You are a great resource on CGN.

Sorry, never saw the post. I was likely pushing some poor unsuspecting centerfire bullet way the HECK out there.

I am hoping to spend more time with my rimfires to aid in trigger time for my F class shooting. Burning through thousands of those rds is getting pretty darn expensive.

Box of SK is DIRT CHEAP by comparison.

At 280 yards I can hit a 48x48 inch plate almost 100%

Sometimes I only get it 90% of the time, but I figure it's because of the inconsistent bulk rimfire ammo.

Of course this is with a 6-24x scope and a Mark II Savage

If your Savage is like mine, try SK Rifle Match. I am sub MOA at 200yds in dead calm air.

haven't made it to 300yds yet but hope it will shoot inside a 9" plate.

Then out to 500yds just because.

My friend is itching to reach out with his 338LM to .......... 3000Yds next season. That will be interesting.

years ago, back in the early 90's. me and a buddy of mine were shooting a remmington model 66 nylon made by cbc of brazil out to 300 meters. it wasent modifyed in any way and out target was a barrel sitting on the ground. i posted that here and got some very nasty reasponses from the members. ( it was posted 2 years ago). i also stated that our best group was about the size of a fist. let me explain that group to you. after shooting 4000-5000 rounds into a steel barrel the entire thing was covered in "groups". we have no idea how many rounds it took to get that "group" it might of been 1500 rounds. so just so you know...it wasent a sniper rifle..lol and we are not great shots, but after enough rounds it all looks good.

cheers

In the early 60's I was with my cousins in Peace River AB and shot a crow with my Cooey 39 (open sights) at a distance that we laughed about for days. Glad I had them with me or no one would have believe me. The crow was large and my front sight was at least twice his size at that distance. Rested on a fence post, raised the front to what I thought would be the correct amount, pulled the trigger, and watched for what seemed a eternity and the crow fell out of the tree. Absolutely pure luck and I know I couldn't do it again in a million tries. Oh was shooting Whiz-Bang .22's.

YOU!!

lol
They weren't nasty, they were funny as heck. My favorite CGN quote came from that post...

YOU
We could make a ragged hole at 300 with a 66 at 300

Fav. reply..:
That's nothing. I shoot gophers out to 1000, timed to not loose eye-lid meat!

I'm going to try for 500 tomorow! I've gone to 200 with mixed rsults....I have over a dozen .22's and, all kinds of ammo. This thread has inspired me..

I had a similar experience with a chinese break action pellet rifle. My friend and i were up a forestry road back when i was a teenager shooting cans when we saw a bird fly up and land on the tip of a tree about 100ish,m away across a shallow valley. I took aim about 10' over the bird and fired, It was one of those shots where i could see the pellet flying through the air and didn't it hit the dam bird... fell right off the top of the tree. I couldn't have made that shot if i were trying, just pure luck.

I can't knock the Cooeys...I have 2 75's. With open sights I have seen (a CGN member) and, myself shoot at 100 and, get: clay pigeon on it's edge, shot-glass, baby food lid, golf ball etc...all at 100. All set up by a fella with a very fancy, zeiss equipped .308....Probably my best day shooting!!!

At 100-200 it's a fine science...past that, well beyond me. I'm certain the ball/bullet will go happily too 500. I have no doubts some will even get close to each other... I'm not sure tomorrow I'll end up with 2 holes touching...

Clayne, great post and great shooting. My son and I do some at 300 yards at a range we shoot at. There is a very high "cut bank" backstop so it is easy to see your hits and adjust accordingly.
