Do you reallly want a longer barrel to avoid transonic issues?
...they have this fancy stuff called sub-sonic ammo. I believe most "real" target .22 ammo is sub-sonic.(Correct at will fellas!!!)

Match ammo is typically spec'd at 1080 fps. (nominal), which is fine in the summer. But the speed of sound drops as the temperature does.
Cheap subsonic ammo is spec.'d at 1050 fps., while the quality subsonic ammo is 1030 fps. or less...

I like the longer barrels as they give a longer sight picture so tend to be a little more accurate when I do my part.
When using my marlin shooting cb's the the only sound you hear is the hammer hitting the pin. My boys like to plink but I would rather not bother the neighbours nor do I like them using my $600 plus rifle. Buying a cheaper rifle makes everyone happy.
