Hey guys, I was wondering what the concensus was on the best all around
22 long rifle ammo was. Remington yellow jackets are about the best I have found but the odd one doesn't fire, and you get the odd shot that goes wild.
I'm shooting ruger bolt action 22's.
thanks for the help.

I like Remington sub-sonics and target for accuracy..but just plinking at whatever i use Thunderbolts/Cyclones.
Well made, cheap ammo..but it is dirty,so you have to like cleaning your guns
Remington Vipers/Yellowjackets are just plain deadly of a round as well.
I'm yet to try the Gameloads..i hear they are pretty good too

what do you mean by "best"
some of the high end eley and lapua ammo is really really good, but stupid pricey (for rimfire)

I use eley yellow in my anschutz, but my .22 kimber really seems to like the CCI stingers.

.22 semi's are sometimes really picky, and the only good ammo is that which you find works for you...

If you mean blowing a dollar sized hole thru bunny at 25 yards, probably one of the hypervelcity trunated hollowpoints like Yellowjackets are best.

For tight groups at 100 metres it's time to start experimenting with some of the many "standard velocity" offerings, not necessarily the most expensive.

22 rimfire ammo as well as firearms can be finiky. If you are looking for accurate ammo for a handgun, you would be better of with experimenting as many different makes & brands you can get.
But as you mentioned you are shooting a bold action ruger so it should not be that much of a problem. I shoot a bolt action savage & also a lever action Marlin and both rifles can shoot almost all ammo into less than one inch group at 50 yards on a sand bag (I am not that good yet).
I have shot Fed. bulk pack & also CCI blazer both under 20.00 including taxes from Canadian tire for a brick with very good results in both of these rifles.
I shoot Eley practice (now Eley Standard) in my handguns or Lapua Standard club (Bulk Pack).
Hope this helps

For my Pistol it's CCI Minimags, For my Anschutz it is RWS... With rimfire you HAVE to test all brands... A good starting point for a bolt action rifle that doesn't rely on the energy of the cartridge to cycle the action is a standard velocity or sub sonic round. I've had good results with RWS, CCI Green Tag, and Eley Rifle (orange). YMMV.

For reasonable accuracy, dependability, enough power to cycle semi's and mainly for the dollar value per round for a decent shell, hands down the winner is IMHO >>>DYNAPOINT>>>

Rem game loads are pretty good for accuracy, and they cycle well in my gun(i think rocks would cycle well in my gun) but the best round ive ever shot are CCI stingers

It all depends on the rifle. I have never owned or shot any .22 that shoots yellow jackets well. I used to own a deadly Marlin Model 60 with an 18 power scope. It would literally shoot the tacks off the corner's of the targets at 100 yards with cyclones. But as soon as it would spit out yellow jackets, it would pattern them like a shotgun. I havent had the heart to use them in my current rifles, though. I do like the Federal copper plated bullets in their more premium line. They group well out of my rifles, and that hollow point is juicy.

I use winchester wildcats most of the time in my 10/22. They're relatively cheap and I have yet to have a FTF and very seldomly have a FTE. I find they have a decent grouping; I still use the factory barrel and trigger and can get 2-3 inch groups at 100 on a good day. Lots of guys like having tack drivers which I can understand but for simple practice, might as well just use the cheaper, reliable stuff. Once you switch to the high end ammo and equipment the practice transfers over pretty well.

Bolt-actions and semi's are worlds apart, if only b/c the semi's have to cycle first...

CCI Minimags have managed to cycle my most stubborn semi's, but good luck getting some of those same semi's to fire the accurate-subsonic stuff. I know that many CGN'ers have or have had excellent semi's that produce good results (or even excellent ones), but the trick is usually in finding the right slops to feed the pigs (the guns, that is)!

Bolt-actions and pumps seem to digest more things well, so that's when the performance factor may come into play for even more rimfire shooters: do you want your rimfire to be a barn-burner "explosive" hollowpoint shooter, a subsonic (lubed) target-load diner, or a "budget" bulk-back gobbler?

Choices, choices!

PLUS: Please read my request in the "ammo" forum/threads. Thank you one and all.

If we are talking hyper velocity stuff like substitute to yellow jackets, then I suggest CCI Velocitor. Way better than CCI Stinger. It really is very accurate for fast bullet and its 40 gr bullet too - you get more energy retention at 100 yards. Less deflection by wind/rain due to heavier bullet weight.

If you want just an accurate round then try all kinds of standard velocity ammo. Eley is a good brand, and so is Lapua. Fiocchi could be good in some rifles. CCI standard velocity "Green Tag", although its horribly expensive. Federal Gold Medal. Those are just a few from top of my head.

Remington Cyclones for small game usually, although I have on hand various loads from several manufacturers just for the sake of trying different things. Velocitors have given good groups but I have not tried them on game yet.

I have an old Cooey single shot and have yet to find a round it doesn't like ! Tried it with some CCI shorts this year and it will keep several rounds withing a quarter size hole at 25 yards....good enough for a grouse gun !

I have a number of good quality 22 rimfires, my explerience is that you take 5 0r 6 cheap brands of ammo to the range and test the ammo, usually you can find a cheap brand that will work well or shoot better in one particular rifle. anyone else find the same experience???
