Years ago a local hardware store gave me a box of these to try to see if it was worth it for him to put on the shelf. I shot a pumpkin with it and many of the pellets rebounded back and hit me in the chest. Shot a partridge and it pretty much gave me the finger and flew away.

They might be good for rats...maybe. But i would expect they would run off and die somewhere. I can't see it making a clean kill on anything. Small birds as mentioned above perhaps.

Weeel, I tried a .177 non-pal pellet rifle on a rat at 5-6 feet - he gave me the middle toe. Those .22 shotshells might be good for mice. MilColl - those targets were with a Favorite smooth-bore and a rifled Favorite. Was your dad's shed over 10 feet deep ?

They can work if used up close
At 10-20 ft i have got a few pocket gophers
instant dead with a wee bit of shredding
At 5 ft it tears them up

I like them for around building foundations and vehicles
no richochet worries

I believe very few people have smoothbore .22's so they can not evaluate their performance.
I have collected guns for 50 yrs. & see few.
I did buy 1 ,,,, a Cooey Md.- 75 smooth bore & have used it for 50 yrs. & seen few other smooth bores. It
is very effective on chipmonks around my house over these years. It has the Fred Routledge
choke bored muzzel. Certainly you need to know your effective range after patterning it.

I had a factory smooth bore chambered for 22 shot shells.

Dismal performance on small birds... I would not bother with one again.

Sparrows in a Quonset were safe but the phone lines running around the perimeter got shorted out with a very small pellet. Phone repair guy found it...

Special purpose in its day, must have been a market
Good teaching tool for the youngins, 'hey go shoot some rats' in the barn/kitchen/outhouse/grainary

It works great on very small critters (up to the size of a red squirrel) at very close range. Rifled barrel effective range is maybe 6 feet, out of my garden gun, 15 feet.

I use it for red squirrel pest control regularly. About 5 or 10 yards is the max from the smooth bore single shot old I use. I only shoot the federal brand with the crimped brass end. Not sure how they'd compare to the CCI ones, but they work surprisingly well for me. The rifled vs smoothbore is night and day.

Indoor Pest Control

I have seen these used in large department stores
in Winnipeg (way back when) small birds would get
in , you know what birds do .

Been there, done that. Tried to shoot a rat about 8 m away - running across a wire, in New Zealand, from a suppressed 10/22. Rat continued running. I think it was CCI shotshells, but it was 24 years ago so coulda been something else.
