Wondering......for those of you that have pondered the same......

Which grain 22 wmr bullet is going to provide the most penetration / "killing power" on larger pests such as coyote, big coons and such. 50 grain? Faster 40 grain? Ultra fast 33 grain?

this is what i use cci-ammunition.com/ballistics/detail.aspx?loadNo=0022 works real nice.

this is what they say on the site for the 22 Magnum RF40 GamePoint JSP cci

Product Description

GamePoint is perfect choice for small game hunters who want big-game bullet performance in their 22 Win Mag.

The fast 33 grain bullets are made for quick expansion on small critters like ground squirrels. 40 Gr. Hp is standard, I've never tried the 50 gr. but expect that they would be best if you're shooting the bigger stuff like coyotes.

AFAIK the 50gr was made by Federal, it was FMJ and since discontinued. For the animals you mentioned, I think any .22wmr will do under 150m. We were blowing a piece of snow fence post(?) to bits with CCI 30gr ammo at about 70m. I was very surprised. Heavier, slower bullets will penetrate more than that explosive 30grainer would.

I have successfully used the Winchester 40g JHP on large beavers and raccoons. It was absolutely devastating. Furthest shot was about 75yds. so I can't vouch for what it would do out to 150. If you want the best penetration, the Winchester 40g solid would be better. I have heard of ranchers using this to penetrate cow skulls with no problems. Apparently, also good at putting holes in metal T-posts, but I haven't had the nerve to try this myself.
