I love my .22s...I have a lot of them ...not much makes me grin as much as spending an afternoon shooting things with them....but ...I (probably unwisely) have been spending a lot of time on the EE ...and I got to thinking ...maybe I should add a .22WMR to the stable
will this make me smile even more?...are there any dissapointing things about the calibre ( other than an increased ammo cost)

thanks

As the price of 17 hmr and 22 wmr has converged, consider the hmr as well. A little more Accurate and extra range and a little quieter to my ears. For a shooting range only gun the hmr has some advantages you may appreciate. To me the 22 mag excels as a small game hunting round, but the hmr is awesome for gophers.

I love the 22mag but if youre looking for grins a 9mm carbine is often cheaper to feed and absolute fun. I truly enjoy my just right carbine but there are others on the market. Cases of a 1000 rnds can be had from various sponsors for $229 to 300. Just a thought.
Or just get the 22mag and be happy. Everyone deserves a new gun

I've fired a .17 which wasn't mine. Really liked it, however I'm a .22mag man... I love my Magnum Research Semi. It's super accurate yet was expensive to purchase. The mag has some really good smack.. I can't say enough good about it.

Try them both out, do your homework on them & choose whats best for you. I wanted a bullet less prone to wind drift & more ft/lbs of energy for killing a yote 100yards & under...

Since a bullet is moving in a fluid (air) it will move with the movement of that fluid. Unless you shoot really light .22HMR bullets, you will be shootinig 500-1000 fps slower. That equates to 40% more time in the air for the .22, and in a cross wind, that equals 40% more drift. Likewise, higher speed equates to less bullet drop at range.

That being said, for Coyotes out to 100 yards; both would work, with a slight edge going to the .22 mag; for ground hogs, Gophers and Richardson's ground squirrels out to, and past 150 yards, the .17 would be good.

I shoot paper and the odd ground-hog. I traded for a CZ 455 in .17 HMR, and I am not only pleased with the rifle, but supper happy with it's sub MOA accuracy at 100 yards. Some ammo is better than others, but all shoot quite well.

Interesting article comparing both here: h ttps://www.chuckhawks.com/compared_17HMR_22WMR.htm

You'll go through more ammo with the 22 mag because of speed. I personally shot with both caliber and the 22 mag is my favorite. I got rid of my 17 HMR because I wanted a heavier bullet to shoot critters over 100 yards, not just sending a mosquito bite.
