JR, in your opinion were these rifles anywhere close to being actual variants of the MP5?

In my opinion... NO, not even close.

NOTHING, I mean NOTHING is interchangeable in the internals. It doesn't even operate on the same principles.

Only the outward appearance is similar to the MP5.

To find these varients would be similar to finding a Ferarri a varient of a Ford Model T because the "T" came first and the Ferarri would not have existed if the "T" had not been invented.

If you watch the video present on the page, there is a short portion of it showing disassembly. The bolt don't seem to look like a G3 derivative bolt & carrier from afar, looks like straight blowback to me, just like most semi-auto rimfire. Who knows, it may be a good argument.

Different bolt and firing mechanism = different gun.

Hopefully the RCMP will give the importer an audience and remove the prohibition status.

+1. The RCMP shouldn't have even classified the rifle unless they had personally inspected one, if indeed they haven't already done so.

AFAIK, they have to have sound technical reasoning behind the classification status and NOT act in an arbritrary fashion.

It's a slick little rig and I'll have one in non-restricted if the price is right.
