Hi folks,

Looking at buying a pistol that will shot subsonic ammo or better yet shorts. My son has issues with loud bangs (30-06 anyone?) and I think a gentle introduction to pistol shooting with little noise will really help him set his heels into the enjoyable side of things.

I was thinking of M&P 22 but with semi auto and mag fed, shorts won't work and subsonics may not cycle it.

So, I'd like to hear from people who have solved this problem, what you shoot, how well it works, accurate ranges to fire on and all that good stuff. Im open to all feasible suggestions that will help me quietly get him settled.

Thanks!

The new Alfa Proj revolvers are getting some decent reviews, Smiths are always nice but can be pricey new, I have a Ruger SP101 .22 that I am really liking. If you are into single actions Ruger, Chiappa, Pietta all have offerings. If you want something on the smaller side maybe a Ruger Bearcat.

I do not have any first hand experience with Taurus or Charter Arms but when i was looking into 22 revolvers they always seem to get the most negative reviews.

Have you tried shooting shorts or subsonic ammo out of it

You won't find any semi that cycles shorts well unless its a target pistol designed for shorts. finding good consistent short ammo is expensive too. like was suggested better hearing protection is a better way to go especially since you are wanting to work him up to larger noises anyhow.

a ruger mark 2 or 3, once well broke in will shoot subsonics ok, as will a CZ cadet. Shooting pistols, is a lot of fun at 25 yards and under for kids. shooting reactive targets keeps them more interested than just shooting paper, and it helps distract them from the noise as they are focused on the balloon popping or little stubby pop bottle squirting than they are on the noise.

I don't think I would get the m&p 22, as it tends to be a bit ammo fussy. Like I said the rugers are good as they tend to eat a wide variety of ammo and for more money the CZ Kadet does too.

You can always start with a good pellet pistol like a feinwerkbau 65. It will shoot out to 15M more accurately than any 22 will and do so with little noise. It will cost you $600 to buy a good one that will last your son a life time.

With a revolver, keep your hearing protection on, even with CB shorts.

Unless you have a long rifle barrel, I find even CBs are loud out of handgun barrels (eg. S&W 17 (6"), S&W 34 (4"), Beretta 71 (3"), Astra Cub (1.75" and surprisingly loud with regular .22 Shorts).

That's the first time I've ever heard that comment about the M&P22. Everything I've seen (including many thousands of rounds through mine) has indicated that it is generally very tolerant of different ammo.

I haven't tried subsonics in mine, though.

Revolvers are a good bet, but I'd wager that they'll be a bit more noisy than a semiauto due to the cylinder gap.

I got subsonics to run reliably in a Norinco m93 (copy of a Colt Woodsman).

If you're willing to smooth out the action, and maybe play with the recoil spring, I wouldn't at all be surprised if you get an M&P22 to run subsonics well.

Ok some food for thought, thanks for the advice. Revolvers would be cool, a smoothed out action on a M&P would be nice, and of course better ear protection is an excellent set of advice that just makes a whole lot of sense. I'm trying to dual purpose it as I would like the M&P 9mm and practicing with its little sister would be beneficial to me as well. However, I am trying to find the best solution, and every shot is a good shot as far as I am concerned :)

I have shot shorts out of a Ruger Single Six, very quit and no recoil. Used it for the similar reasons to you, new shooters and more scared of the noise than anything else. Then you can use the same firearm to move up to 22LR and 22 WMRF before going centerfire. Very safe for new shooters since as soon as the trigger is pulled you have a few steps to do before it will fire again.

What about a 10/22 rifle, with low velocity CCI Q22? I fired a box of them out of my Takedown, and I swear, my Gamo Pellet rifle makes more noise then they do.. I think they're only like 700fps..

I'm amazed you got subsonics to work in your 10/22 that holds some promise, I have one of those and we would have the freedom of just hitting some bush. He really wants the handguns though, and I have him shooting bow and pellet guns already :)
