.22 pistol and shorts or subsonic ammo

Look for ear muffs that fit him well. I'm guessing that he's a smaller and younger lad if he's jumping at the noise. So doubling the protection will help a lot. But having worked with my club's Jr .22 programme for a few years now I've seen a lot of smaller kids that simply don't fit the big adult size ear protectors at all well. Finding a set suitable for HIS age will help a lot to get a better seal.

I haven't tried shorts in my handguns but subsonics like the CCI Quiet still produce a helluva pop out of any handgun. I suspect that you'd have to go with a revolver and CB cap ammo to get a truly noticeable and significant reduction in the sound. Rifles produce a far bigger noise change with different ammo than handguns. It all comes down to barrel length and the lowering of the final pressure in the barrel at the point the bullet leaves the muzzle.

A .22 revolver, even using shorts or subsonic ammo, isn't exactly quiet. Buy him better hearing protection or an air gun.
Reactive targets are fun for the 'Big Kids' too.

Ok here is my thoughts. If you place WTB post in exchange asking specifically for rapid fire target pistol, you may be amazed at how many are still circulating. They became pretty much useless for any competitive shooter, although I would guess all competitive shooters used to have at least one.

Some traders here on CGN used to carry them not too long ago for cheap, I am talking literally couple hundred bucks, nice guns, target grips and all.

And lastly, everything you shoot out of pistol length barrel will be very loud, your kid will still need a hearing protection. But then, maybe if your kid shot 22lr and then 40SW or even 9mm and then switched back to 22, this maybe a better way to build shot sensation tolerance. JMHO

So thanks folks, leaning towards a single six right now. Haven't had a ton of time to research yet but I still have a little time to get things lined up properly.

Good choice: I use a Smith 617 and CCI Standard velocity ammo, sometimes I don't really hear much noise from pistol compared to other guns in the area..
Note! Have great hearing..

When using my CZ American and same ammo it sounds just like a mild pop.
