You can't go wrong with a S&W revolver in .22. They'll last a lifetime and don't break your budget in ammo costs, as you are probably not firing it in rapid fire mode. I have a model 17 and find it very economical. Consider it.

Maybe I should have mentioned that I own several semi-autos and a couple of single shots and that I've been at the shooting game for some 40 years. I think you won't go wrong with a revolver- the amo lasts longer than with a semi-auto.

My range actively recommended AGAINST any kind of revolver for their timed bullseye stage.

That said, I'd love a 617 or 17 and am actively looking for one.

Yeah, baby!!! I've owned one since they first came out. A very nice, reliable and accurate pistol, albeit a tad on the expensive side. I also own a Ruger MkII Government Competition and S&W 617. I don't think you can go wrong with any of these.....

I have one one order and haven't shot one but check out the GSG 1911 .22 from Blue Line....
 
my RUGER MK III TARGET was deadly out of the box, and has not once malfunctioned. It was my most painless pistol purchase ever as far as reliability is concerned. I bought a red dot for it, and now I have a blast with it.

Hey I just got a red dot for mine last week. I just put a cheap tasco on it for fun and it actually worked.. What did you get?
 
Ruger is not that hard to strip and reassemble. I held off buying one for years due to its 'complicated' reputation. I surfed the net, bought a rubber dead head hammer and after a few good whacks it came apart. Seating it back together took another whack. Read the booklet with the gun and you can strip and reassemble it.

This is my favorite too. I like the empty magazine open action device. (unlike the Mk I)
Plus I myself have no need for optics on this handgun, (Mk III) so I think it's perfection on the part of Ruger.

The only other Ruger I am ignorant of, but I like the 1911 lines, is any Ruger 22/45. (can't get over the ugly mags though)
 
I totally agree that the Ruger (III in my case) is very easy to strip, clean and re-assemble. It's reputation for being difficult is way exaggerated IMO. If you can read and follow directions you can do it. I you need, rugerdotcom and UUTOOBE are there to help.
 
the only problem with reassembling the ruger (i've got a mkII target)is getting the hammer strut(the little dangling thing connected to the hammer) to seat onto the mainspring housing(the cup or detent).apart from that it's easy...

1911's have the same issue to a smaller degree. And an Iver Johnson clone of the Colt Woodsman I have has the exact same issue. After doing it a few times you soon wonder what all the fuss was about. But at first it'll make you wonder about the ancestry of the person that designed it. I think it comes down to just getting to know the angle to hold the gun or how to tilt it so the hammer strut drops into place on command.
