Hey all, I'm in the process of getting a model 53, so I'm trying to figure out what kind of dies I should be looking at getting. Got a question with regards to case forming.

Can I just throw a .357Mag case through a .22RJ FL sizing die or do I need to form it by increments? Redding makes a custom set of forming dies that includes three separate forming dies, the third doubling as a trim die. Would this be a worthwhile purchase? Necessary or just preferable?

Second, RCBS, Hornady and CH4D all make sets of sizing and seating dies for the caliber, does anyone know where I could find some in Canada?

Some years back I had a 'Jet' and a Ruger 256 H.E. I had factory Jet brass and RCBS dies. Couldn't tell you about forming Jet brass from 357 but give the tech people at RCBS an e-mail. With similar questions in forming 219 Donaldson Wasp brass from 30-30 they were very helpful with procedure info and forming die recommendations.
 
Thanks Harold but they're not obsolete, had no problem finding some bullets (at Epps). They're even listed on Hornady's website.

Thanks Johnn for the tip about RCBS. May just buy some factory cases though, I thought they were a lot harder to find than they actually are.

Also if you're forming brass from .357 Mag. case you'll need to anneal the brass cases or they'll collasps its a time comsumming projet. Put your brass in pan and fill the water half way up the brass and take a propane torch and heat the top of the brass cartridge till they turn orange then push them over into the water thats it done.Do this before you form them or you will have problems. Make sure you trim the overall lenght to 1.278" or you will have problems ejecting them out of the cylinder once they've been shot good luck I'm loading Jets now while i'm writing this LOL. I'm using Hornady #2210 .222 Jet 40gr.Bullet with 11.3 grs of H-110 and Winchester Small Pistol Primers. Love this load for shooting Silhouettes at 100 Meters works good for me. The Hornady .223 Hornets work also Good Luck Reloading ... Rick

the last issue of Handloader has a great article on loading and making brass from 357 mag brass.
ps: has all the part #'s of the dies needed to form the brass.

Still haven't found a model 53, but I'm always on the lookout for components so I'll be ready to go when I do.
