.22 Revolvers for a first gun.

I notice every new guy that gets into shooting (me included) seems to go for semi's and nobody seems to mention revolvers. Can anyone point out to a good .22 revolver. I would really consider a nice old school looking revolver for my first gun as long as the price is reasonable. Im sure a single action would be fun too.

Its the third one down. The S&W Model 17. Looks like a hell of a gun, but I don't really know anything about it. I just know it sure looks nice and would seem to be fun to fire.
 
I have a Model 17 and it's a great little gun. They also make the 617 which is just the modern equivalent. It was one of my first guns and has really helped my shooting, cheap to shoot and no recoil.
 
My dad just gave me a 617 stainless double lug in 6inch. It is simply amazing! Just shot 400rds this morning. Golf balls at 50 yards are not an issue. Except after I finished my coffee and had a slight shake:redface:
 
Ruger Single Six

I'm going to pick up my first revolver and it's going to be a Ruger Single Six. I'm kinda getting partial to 'westerns' and had a hankerin' for a cowboy-ish six shooter. Since I wanted another .22 (my other is a CZ Kadet Kit for my Shadow) I decided on the Single Six.

I guess this single action revolver will sort of slow your pace down and let you enjoy each shot! ;-)

I have a soft spot for the single six as well. Its a .22 have fun, any number of pistols will provide that. I miss the days before I moved up to a .45 and 9m and cost to shoot wasn't an issue. Enjoy your .22, after that its on to reloading;)
 
The 17 is a truly amazing gun. And it's excellent practice for shooting the other K frame guns in .38Spl/.357Mag. Armcos seems a little overpriced though. But then it has the LONG 8 something inch target barrel so that may make it more collectable or desireable. The 6 inch barrel versions go for around the $500 to $550 range. Be patient and one will show up. I recently bought one from a shooting buddy who is more into stainless guns. I was happy to help him keep his collection pure by taking it off his hands :D It's a joy to shoot and isn't going anywhere but to the range with me for many years to come.

I enjoy my cowboy SAA revolvers too but I just can't see myself loading .22 the same way. It's just not for me. So I was quite happy to find a Hi Standard Double 9 a while back for cheap'ish. It's a 9 shot hand ejector style that looks just like the SAA style but thanks to the tilt out cylinder it makes unloading and loading MUCH easier. The double action pull is brutal so I treat it as a single action when shooting. It's actually turned out to be darned decent for groups. It took me a while to get the grip just right but now I'm able to shoot it almost as well as my other S&W revolvers. And it's getting better all the time. They aren't fancy but they shoot nice if in good shape.

:D I was afraid i had the only one of these around! Isn't that DA pull brutal!! but as a single action it is a fun gun, great to take new shooters out with, and you don't have to feed it thru a loading gate! Shoots not bad too. No model 41 or anything, but enought to have fun with!
 
A Smith and Wesson 17/617 22lr revolver is THE quintessential 22 target revolver. You will probably never wear it out in your lifetime. Other pistols will come and go but my 17-3 will be my grandson's one day.

Get one with a 6 inch barrel...best all around tube length.

I think there's a few more of us but they are just too embarrased or shy to mention it... :D

I actually swapped the main spring for a home made one to lighten the trigger pull. This reduced the trigger pull nicely but I get about one light strike per cylinder with this if I shoot DA. But it works 100% in SA so I'm willing to live with that since I shoot it SA all the time out of respect for it's similarity to the SAA revolvers. In fact if I could find another one it would make for a nice practice pair for two handed Gunfighter style shooting in CAS. Far cheaper to do it that way than with the .38Spl rounds.
 
A 617 and a box of 22's from Walmart will improve your shooting beyond your expectations.

And it is a great way to get your kids shooting or even friends that may have expressed an interest in trying your new activity.
 
Awesome gun

I've got a 617 with a six inch barrel, six shot (mate to my 629) Also have a Colt Peacemaker. The 22lr is the best cartridge for anyone to start with and continue cheap practice. I have and will shoot the 617 more than any other gun I shoot, and I'm not embarrassed to admit it. It's good to see a guy go the right way, start smaller and work up...I like revolvers to start for simplicity and learning good from. Good luck and good shooting.

I recently bought a S&W Model 17-6 and couldn't be more pleased with it. It shoots rings around my Ruger MKIII Std 6". The Model 17 is incredibly accurate, reliable, and fun to shoot. Mine has the full underlug, target trigger, hammer, and grips. Its in Exc condition. I paid $599 for it. If you're interested, I have a current list of Model 17's/K-22's for sale in Canada, ranging in price from $499 for one in good condition to $795.00 for one in excellent condition.
