Hi Guys

Looking to buy my first .22 rifle and would like some input.
I'd like something accurate, cheap, fun, etc.. (all the good stuff)
Any input is appreciated.

Thanks!

What do you want to do with it? Small game hunting? Plinking? Target shooting? There are many options out there, but I'd keep an eye out for a used Winchester Model 69a if I were you... Some of them are grooved for a scope mount. Check the EE rimfire forum.

In the wide world of guns, ANY .22 rifle is considered a beginner's rifle. Pick out whatever you like and have fun. You have to start somewhere, but there's no telling where you'll end. :)

The usual definition of a beginner "anything" includes the word "cheap" or "inexpensive". "Target" means "accurate", as in 1" 50 meter groups.

May I recommend the Marlin bolt like the 980, 981, 925, or if you like semi-autos, the 60. The Savage MKIIF or G (with Accutrigger) are also suitable. New or used, these rifles will fill both requirements. I like the tube-fed Marlin 981T and Winchester 190 semi-auto, but many like magazines. You can shoot iron sights or scopes with these choices, but make sure you can mount a scope easily before you buy a particular model as some do not come from the factory with mount grooves or drilled and tapped holes.

You can choose more expensive models, of course, but these are my picks for entry level 22 rifles.

How "cheap"? :yingyang:

When I first started out, all my .22 purchases were under $200 (including tax)...:)......then it got progressively more "spendy"....:p

Thanks for all the suggestions guys!

Cheap to me is under $400 tax in.

I also forgot to mention that I prefer a semi-auto and Im left handed (if that makes a difference for these)

I'm really liking the ruger 10/22 the more I read about it

You can not go wrong with a Marlin or Savage. They are known for reliability and accuracy out of the box. If u don't mind spending a bit more, get a CZ.

as far as left goes, you'll learn to adapt if you get a bolt- i'm full blown southpaw and my first was a cooey 60- tube fed repeater my dad left me- barrel looks like it was made out of a tractor axle- but seriously, get the 10/22- if safety is your concern, nobody says you HAVE to put 10 rounds in the mag- that's why some of the 22s have 5 rounds in the container row- 50 all told, but only 5 to the column

I'm in the process of building a custom 10/22 (couldn't resist - they're pretty cool!). But my favourite .22 is my uncle's old bolt action Mossberg. Not sure what model, but it just fits right - a bit of weight, but just enough to stabilize it. Quite accurate too - always enjoyed shooting golf balls at about 25 yards with it and then proceeding to pick off the broke pieces - freehand! Full stock with finger grooves. He has another with a stock that pivots down on the fore end, but it just doesn't fit me the same.

By the way - best for a beginner is likely a single shot bolt action, but you'll get bored with that way too quick! Keep in mind the safety aspects of the feed and action, but likely better with a mag fed bolt or semi auto.
