.22 rifle recommendations

Hello,
I am new to firearms, I am expecting my pal shortly. I am looking for recommendation for a semi auto .22 rifle. My understanding is the ruger 10/22 is best, but is limited to 10 round magazine capacity. I am looking for something comparable in reliability, but also allows a 25 round mag. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Two key questions you may want to answer if you want good advice:

What's your budget?

What's it for? Are you looking to plink and shoot gophers on the farm? Or shooting from a bench looking for 50M accuracy? Competition?

Stay away from the 10-22 you will spend the same amount 'improving' it and in the end it's still a 10-22. My recommendation would be a Marlin Model 60 you could probably squeeze 12-13 into the tubular magazine. It's gives you semi-auto fun at a much lower cost.

If you want accuracy nothing beats a bolt gun - my choice would be the Savage Mark II with iron sights a good place to learn

Second this, love my Model 60!

There is nothing wrong with a 10-22 . and I have shot many of them and they can be very very accurate . I don't know why the post above stated that you have to improve them . I shot many groundhogs years ago with a couple of different ones . and I have read that the Marlin 22 model 60 doesn't hold up as well as the Ruger 10-22 shooting high velocity 22 ammo and you need to install a buffer in behind the bolt to keep it from damaging it's self . not that the model 60 isn't a nice 22 rifle . and a 25 round mag ? I don't know if you an buy those anymore . the best one on the market for the 10-22 is the BX 22 made by Ruger but it's restricted up here .

about two weeks ago my buddy in Texas bought a 10-22 and it was the take down model . he loved it so much he just went out and bought another 10-22 . it isn't a take down model . and he loves it also . so you can take if from here .

Look at all the aftermarket parts that are available for it - I had a 10-22 probably spent about another $300.00 changing parts here and there in the end it wasn't worth much more than I paid

I bought a used 10/22 over 45 years ago. To date it has seen in excess of 100,000 rounds. A couple of years ago the magazine wore out other than replacing that all I've ever done is clean it every 5 or so years. Accuracy is still minute of gopher.
I can't recommend any other 22 semi more.

I used to believe the rumor that accurate 10/22's cost a lot. But anyone who thinks you have to spend crazy money getting a 10/22 accurate has never owned a VLEH. I've owned two of them and both can hang out with most CZ's. Both were sub $500.

I had a Savage Mark II that was a tack driver. I think it may have been the most accurate rifle I've ever owned, beating or the Remington 700 I spent $$$ upgrading. The factory Savage was just insanely accurate. Detachable magazine as well but only ten rounds.

Probably I got lucky with that one.

10/22 is a semi and that can be a lot more fun. To know what would be the best for you it would help to know what your want to do with it!

If your looking at a10/22 look at Dlask. Build ala crate and shot great. Have two Dlask, one tuff 22 and one Dar 22. Both shoot .5 groups at 100 yds.

Grab a tikka or cz bolt gun and learn to shoot accurately rather than plinking.

If you are set on higher capacity mags for plinking go remington 597 or gsg16. I had the gsg16 for 3 shooting sessions. The appeal wore off fast. I much prefer challenging myself with very accurate shooting with the t1x rather than plinking.

Welcome to the firearms community,

You might not realize it right now but before long you will likely have more then a few rifles and pistols (if you have your RPAL).... it's just the way it goes.

I wouldn't get to hung up on what your first choice might be and once you narrow it down to a few contenders just grab the best deal you can find. If your chasing accuracy with a .22lr you will need to also try different choices of ammo.... some guns shoot bulk ammo fairly decently which is a bonus if your just into accurate plinking.

It's nice having the option of a larger magazine but it's pretty easy to switch out 10 round magazines and the ruger rotary magazine is very reliable and the flush fit is nice.
I like the ruger takedown with the magpul backpacker stock myself but there are quite a few models to choose from if you go down the 10/22 road... the Sporter is nice to with a walnut stock.

Pumps, lever's, bolts even single shot's..... they are all fun and offer a slightly different experience.

This. Had 110 round drum for the 16 and 4 mags, shot it a few times and sold it off. replaced it with 2 CZ's and a T1X in .17hmr much more satisfying but to each their own I guess.

Consistent half-inch groups at 100 yards? Or "best group of the day was half-inch at 100 yards?" I have a TUF22, and it's not even close to 0.5" at 100 yards.

Just buy the 10/22, I played with a dozen rimfires until I bought one now I own three. If you dont like the trigger Sylvestre sporting goods sells the Volquarsten hammer for a good price. You might as well pick up 3 or 4 mags for it too. Years ago I used to go through a brick at the range. These days I am good with 4 or 5 mags through the 10/22 in the same amount of time. Just cause you can dump a mag doesn’t necessarily make it more fun. I actually like the flush fit the 10/22 offers. The Marlin 60 and Remington 552 are good choices as well.

More like live and learn.... :)
It's an itch that needs to be scratched, part of the journey and for some blasting cans and doing mag dumps never gets old.

Well here you are on the brink of the money pit... No one gun does it all... Looks, feel, accuracy, weight, style, price.... Everyone is ready to let you know what their favorite gun is, and they are often right, they have a good one that they like. It appears you are interested in a Ruger and I would say do not limit yourself by needing 25 rounds. You can get trimag or maybe double mag setups for a 10/22. (It is fun to blast through a 25 round mag but in the long run it gets expensive and in the long run you may decide you like the challenge of a more precision style of shooting.) ;) It is a great basic rifle in stock form, comes in many configurations and is easily upgradeable. You can buy upgraded ones right here on equipment exchange. Ready to go Dlask 10/22's straight from Dlask. (This by the way would be my choice.) Guns hold their value fairly well if you keep them in good shape. So... buy, sell, have fun.

Savage A22 is a solid gun so long as you get the target version. Friend has one and he's doing 8" @ 200y with it. I had a 10/22 target that cost me 450 and it needed zero modifications or work done to it, did just as well as my friends A22.

Yeah. 10-22's are no good. Right. How many shiploads of them have been sold, and the owners are quite happy with them. Couple of forum sponsors have them on sale for around $300 or less quite often. I have one I bought new in about 1997 and the only "mod" I've done to it is disable that stupid bolt hold open. I used it for shooting gophers a lot over the years.

Well some believe that, because there are so many aftermarket parts, they’re junk. Do you think it has a direct correlation with there being over 8 million of them not to mention the variants copied directly off the original design. If I was a company that would be the market I’d be after. They’re a great gun period.
