.22 rimfire for Coyotes?

If you can get them close enough (-50M) go for it. I've shot larger feral dogs with a 22lr with positive results.

If we're talking 22WRM, stretch that to 100M.

:D

Get something bigger. Not saying it cant be done, it can. Just wouldn't be my first choice or even second.

For quick, clean kills a .22 rimfire is not enough IMO.

It will do the job at close range, but so will a rock or a sharp stick. There are better choices than .22LR.

I prefer using enough gun to make sure even a marginal hit is a killing shot. You owe it to the animal your hunting to put it down quickly.

Its doable but if a .22lr was my only option for coyotes I would stay home untill I aquired somthing with a little more jam. Just my 2 Cents.

....at range under 50 yards with very good shot placement, a 22 LR is just barely adequate. Yellow jackets may not penetrate a shoulder joint, they are fast but light, and designed for quick expansion. I would not use a .22 LR for recreational hunting of coyotes. If forced to kill a problem coyote with a .22 LR, I'd use a standard high speed hollow point for best penetration. But coyote rifles really start at .22 magnum and up.

using a 22lr leaves A LOT of room for error. I bet you wound more then you kill. A coyote isnt the easiest thing to hit, limiting yourself to a rimfire will bite you in the ass, likely more then once.

get a .22 CENTERFIRE and be done with it, shoot em at any range your little heart desires.

I believe the "nays" win this one ;)

Robert Ruark said it best: "use enough gun." We all have a responsibility to make reasonable choices that ensure the animals we shoot are killed humanely and do not suffer needlessly.

Amen to that.

There are many different kinds of "wounded", but only one kind of "dead".

22 lr will be fine. Just use hollow points( stinger is the best choice), and a10rd- 30rd clip.

CHEERS
22 LR Barely does it.......and only at close close range.
My example, once while literally guarding a beseiged chicken coop with my 222 rifle,
a buddy who wanted to come along for the ride, had to borrow one of my 22 LR carbines.
The semi-auto rifle he used was sighted in, with 22 CCI Stingers.
He went for a stroll and encountered a red fox curled up and asleep in the rain. It took four stingers to do the dirty deed, @35 yards no less.

I've shot several coyote's with a .22,and I did recover them all. One was DRT,as I shot it in the neck and broke the spine. Another one required lots of tracking and several follow up shots. The others were all head shots at under 30 yards, so also DRT. However, I would not recommend it,and now use a .223 and 12 guage to do the job. The best bullet I found in the .22 is the Velocitor by CCI, its fast but still a 40gr bullet. The neck shot coyote was shot with a Veocitor, and then shot again in the neck with a regular Dynapoint at closer range. I then dissected the neck and found the Dynapoint never even made it to the spine, while the Velocitor had made it to the spine and broke it,stopping just beyond. I'm going to try shooting a couple through the chest/shoulders(after they're dead) and then cutting them up to see how the bullets behaved. I also want to do the same with some different shot types and sizes.
