22 rimfire handgun recommendations

Once again, a reminder that the Ruger Mk. 1 is worth consideration. The only drawback to these is that they don't stay opened on an empty mag, although there's a modification to fix that.

I have a bull barrel Mk. 1 that I won't part with. It is hands down the most accurate pistol I own.

Looking at purchasing a 22 for plinking at the range, either revolver or semi auto pistol. Quality and accuracy primary focus. Any recommendations ? Ive previously shot center fire revolvers and pistols extensively so have no preference as to action type. Thanx,

My first 22 handgun was a Ruger Mark II, for plinking. Then my interest in 22 handguns shifted to using .22 LR ammo to practice handling and shooting center fire versions. I sold the Mark II because it didn't feel like any of my centerfires.

Being a 1911 fan, I wanted a 22 LR conversion. So I got a Peter Stahl 22 lr (slide, barrel and magazine) conversion kit.
As S&W revolvers were my favorite wheelguns, I had J (M35, IIRC) and K (M17-2) frame 22s. I also had a Browning Buckmark with which to practice, as its controls and grip frame angle were similar to the 1911s.

Of course, the above 22s doubled as plinkers as well. As I got somewhat better with the centerfires, I felt little need for the 22 versions so one by one sold or traded them off.

So my suggestion is to get .22 LR versions of your existing centerfire handguns, or centerfires that you plan to acquire.

Thanx for eveyones input, very much appreciated!! I went with a Browning Buckmark, it just felt right in my hands. Tried many of the models sugggested and had a bit of a hard time deciding. Now just waitning for the CFC to process the paperwork so I can pick it up and go to the range to try it out.

I am a pistol newbie as well, for a cheap plinker I just bought a Ruger 22/45 Target. It has the 5.5" bull barrel, which if I had anything bad to say it would be that the barrel is pretty heavy and throws the balance off a bit. For the $ 300 I paid in the EE, it is accurate and has pretty decent sights. I shot 900 rounds through it my first range outing (yes, 900 :)) and it function flawlessly. I did the slingshot mod, removed the load chamber indicator and magazine safety, all three mods are totally reversable and I wouldn't shoot the gum without doing them first.

I've shoot a Ruger SP101 in 22 if revolvers are your thing. It is pretty nice too, but also very pricy.
