Hey CGN,

Any love out there for the .22 Savage High-Power? I am inheriting a gun in that caliber and just wondering what the general thoughts are on it. I know the "popular" savage 99 came in it but also know that due to the guns design...epically the take down model that people wrongly think the caliber is in accurate. I also read that when it first came out...people used it as a big/dangerous game caliber and went after Tigers with it...scary!!!

I think its placed in between .223Rem and .243Win "power" wise. In this correct? I know its an older, obsolete caliber but I do enjoy shooting the less common stuff time to time.

Thanks,

- J

Seiller + Bellot make ammo and trade ex carries it........I have a black+white photo of a earlier gold rush settler lady near Barkersville BC with two large grizzly hides hanging from the clothes line she shot on their claim with her Savage .22 HP...............Harold

I plan to reload...and should as I shoot "expensive" calibers... .45ACP, .308Win, .410, 7.5x55 Swiss and now the Savage HP. I just need to get the equipment and start reading lots. Its a scary thing to start for someone who has never done it before lol

Well Clay at Prophet River has the absolute best deal I have ever seen on a full reloading kit - RCBS Rockchucker Supreme kit for $300 plus a $50 rebate. Almost makes me wish I wasn't fully set up already!

Thanks 1899! I didn't know that. I've been putting off getting started on reloading for way too long. I have nothing to add about the .22HP except a question: Can i use it to shoot into space? Thanks guys. :)

The .22 Savage High Power with a 70 gr bullet has 1225 ft lb of energy at the muzzle. The .223 Remington with a 69 gr bullet has 1380 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle. The .243 Winchester with a 70 gr bullet has 1795 ft lbs.

So - the .22 HP is slightly less powerful than the .223 but way less powerful than the .243.

The .22 HP is a great groundhog gun and would do a coyote quite well but I wouldn't use it on a deer or anything bigger.

I've owned 2 Savage 99 Takedowns in .22 HP and they were great "varmint" guns and quite accurate for a light, short barreled, open sighted rifle.
