I'm sure I'll get flamed for such a stupid question but I can't find the answer on Google too quickly and most of you will probably know... So, can I use .22 Short in a .22 LR rifle? I just made a deal to purchase a Winchester 490 .22 LR rifle and would like to know before I try it on my own and injure myself or damage the weapon.

or pumps...not sure about the lever actions...I like those little guys! I doubt it would work on semi.lr. due to the pressure required to operate the slide.

I have a remington model 552 speedmaster semiauto that takes shorts long and long rifles . It has a tube magizine. It is stamped as such on the barrel. Not familiar with the winchester. What is stamped on the barrel?

.22 Shorts in a Winchester 490

The Winchester 490 that I'm buying is semi-auto
.22 Shorts will not work in a Model 490 Winchester, not enough power in a Short cartridge to kick the bolt back, also will give trouble trying to chamber a short rd from the mag, gets hung up as the bolt strips it from the mag, it will fire the rd but will not eject, you will have to manually work the bolt. By the way a 490 Winchester is a excellent .22 rifle, when using .22 Long Rifle cartridges ,well made, a very good looking rifle , one of the nicest trigger pulls i have ever seen, much nicer than a Ruger 10/22.Keep it clean from crud in around the chamber and the bolt lightly oiled and you have yourself a great .22!

I have a Winchester 190 semi .22, it says on the barrel it takes shorts, longs and long rifle but it has a tube mag. I've never tried shorts.
Why would you want to shoot shorts anyway ?

Readily available, yes. They usually cost more than 22lr though. The only advantage (?) is that they are somewhat quieter than the 22lr's. Personally I've never had an issue with a 22lr being too loud.

The nice thing about shorts is that if you are shooting grouse or rabbits, and you miss with your first shot (which we all know never happens) they will often just sit there looking around giving you a chance for a second. You seldom have that opportunity with the LR. You can get subsonics that are almost as quiet as shorts and some do cycle the semi-auto bolts. Remington Sub-sonics work in my 10-22, although the accuracy isn't superb. Might be worth giving them a try in the Win 490 though. CB makes some too.
