.22 Short...

I still use shorts for hunting in my pump

However if there were short only guns for a decent price and quality id buy one. I considered building an entire 1022 based on the short kit posted on the ee

ISSF Rapid Fire Pistol used to use .22 Short pistols, but the rules have changed to require .22LR, which has made these guns obsolete.

When I acquired my first 22 rifle, It was a Winchester "Rabbit" gun, marked 22 Short and Long only.
Shorts at the time were 29 cents for 50, so were the bargain priced ammo. [LR were 49 cents, lol]
Today, shorts are harder to find than LR, and are considerably more expensive.
Since the 22 Long Rifle is so highly developed [there must be 40 or more types out there] There is
little reason to bother with shorts anymore. I have a few boxes of shorts at home, strictly for
nostalgia. I won't shoot them, even though I have 2 or 3 rifles that can use them. Dave.

Yep.

A Long Rifle barrel has a 16 inch twist and a Short intended barrel has a 20 to 22 inch twist rate, which won't stabilize a long rifle bullet (heavier, thus longer, requiring a faster twist rate).

Shooting shorts in a Long Rifle chamber is not ideal, as there tends to be some build up in front of the case in the chamber area and the bullet has a long jump to reach the rifling.

All in, it makes about the same sense to go that route these days as the dudes that were all keen to build up rifles for the Aquila SSS ammo that we could not even get at the time.

The huge selection of Long Rifle types of ammo is pretty much a sign that the market has what it wants, for the most part.

As for stocking up at the close out sale...then what? Hard to find a good close out sale when you need one, eh? :)
