It seems that current thinking is that with modern ammo and proper cleaning, it shouldn't hurt the gun. In reasonable quantities, I don't see a problem.

I think the problem comes from shooting lots of shorts, then using long rifle without proper cleaning, which can cause jams.

Why use shorts when you can get regular 22LR subsonics cheaper, (or even match-quality subsonics)? Every bit as quiet

I use CB longs-quieter than subsonics and still effective for dispatching coons raiding my chicken coop[shoot them between their eyes and they drop out of the tree like a ton of bricks]
