.22 sub 500 pellet enough to deal with crows?

I'm on mobile and can't do a proper search, so I apologize in advance for what may be a repeat question;
I have a severe crow problem at my house. They're cawing 18 hours a day and attacking the smaller birds at the feeders. City bylaw is no discharge so firearms are out of the question. My neighbour is asking if his spring action "495fps" 22 pellet gun can humanely dispatch these vermin (as they're waking him as he comes off shift work). He's aware of possible bylaw issues, he's more concerned with ethically taking the animal.

You know one place I lived the guy next door would shoot the magpies with a high power pellet gun everyone around him knew he did it even the Cop across the lane and the CO that lived across the street.

Don't waste your time. Feathers are too tough. I nail about 40-50 grackles per year with a 495 .22, and this is barely enough for these birds, let alone crows. CAN it be done, sure. I can kill a deer with my 10/22..... Trying for head shots will result in quite a few "blown-off beaks" hardly humane, even where these dirty vermin are concerned.

Get rid of the nest (if they're around that consistently, it's because they have a nest nearby) and you get rid of the crows. Ojibway bird snare works really well, for the first few anyways. After that, they seem to instagram with each other about avoiding such traps.

Or move to the country and use a 12 gauge, which won't work either because country crows don't come anywhere near shooting range lol!

I second that! They are crafty buggers! At my cousins farm they won't come within 80 yards if you're in the yard with a shotgun, but will happily sit in a tree 20 yards away if you have nothing with you. Kill one or two with the pellet gun, word will travel and they will wake you up while staying just beyond range.

Thanks for the tips. We found the nest today. The 'man with a gun' situation wouldn't happen because the back yard is completely fenced, and only my windows can see into his yard. Since we can't get within 20 yards of the nest we'll have to come up with something to remove it from the tree. It's not safe enough to take them on outlying branches (Not likely to hit anything but...)

Anyway, next step I think is to grab a pressure washer and the 0° nozzle tip. We'll blast the nest out of the tree.

I recommend a higher powered air rifle with specifically designed hunting pellets. Predator polymags in particular are pretty good. The standard crosman hollow points work well too. I don't think crows with sub 500 is ethical (grackles and small pest species go for it), but that is just me. You can get some very tunable C02 air guns that will do the job better.

I've done it. Similar scenario, the dang things woke me up every morning I was off. And extra on garbage days. Hang up a dead one if you can.

The same air rifle took a fair number of gophers fairly well. .22 lead pellets in the mid to high 400s worked. (Or even low 400s on occasion.)

I've seen a farmer take a piece of bread , soak it in ether starting fluid and throw it on the ground .

the crow eats it , then a few minutes later passes out .

otherwise , I wonder how a paintball gun , with a barrel extension and frozen paintballs might work ?

A paintball with the "right" ammo is deadly. At least as deadly as a high powered slingshot.

A paintball gun isn't a good idea. You can only get standard paintballs, less lethal rounds are very difficult to get in Canada. Freezing paintballs causes them to dimple. They break on impact releasing all of there energy. Paintballs will not consitantly shoot higher than 350fps without exploding. Even with less lethal ammo they aren't accurate.

your just not thinking outside of the box enough here ....... all a guy needs to do is get creative and find something that works . the first step is trying ........

I've seen a guy extend the barrel on a paintball gun with about 16 " of copper pipe , and with the appropriate
"slingshot " ammo , blow holes through 3/4 inch plywood .

Mmmm Hmm!

Sing it! I have done similar experimentation.
