Whats a good .22 rimfire target rifle ? I want to pick up a .223 Savage F/TR or LRPV but the funds are low and thought a good .22 might get me having fun quicker? What do you think?

Shooting is shooting. 22LR is a decent way to get lots of rounds downrange. You can spend as much on a quality rimfire as a quality centerfire. However if you are just looking at learning to shoot and doping wind. You can learn alot from a minute of angle shooter.

If you can find one I would recommend a TOZ 8 or TOZ 12, the last one I bought for a 100$ from epps. The three that I have had were sub minute of angle shooters. I use mine out to 300 Metres (limit of my range) it is fun and challenging to hit at extended range with the 22.

Top quality rimfires can easily exceed the cost of a centerfire but I am guessing you are looking for trigger time.

Ideally, an older CIL/Anschutz sometimes found at a gun show for cheap would make a great learner.

Brno #4 in good condition are also great.

There were some Norinco sporters that were basically CZ American knock offs. Crude in finish but excellent performance. Used CZ mags too.

Even a Savage or Marlin can do yeomans duty. If it gets too hot here, I will likely convert my 10/22 to a target set up and use that.

As long as the rifle shoots consistently ie ammo doesn't produce flyers, have at it.

Savage Heavy barrel, CZ452 American or Varmint, Ruger 10/22 with lots of money spent on it, TC target semi auto, or an old Lakefield with heavy barrel would all work. I'm guessing that you want a scope, otherwise you would want something with peep sights. Lakefield made some nice target 22's with decent peeps.

I've got a BRNO model 4. A few weeks ago, it was very calm, and I was set up all quiet and fired 3 rounds at the target at 100 yards. The group can be covered with a dime. Next I shot a 5 round group at the same distance, the group can be covered by a quarter.

They shoot better than I do, most of the time.

My buddy has a Savage mark II FV and it's almost as accurate. With good ammo, it'll keep 5 rounds at an inch, with no wind.

10/22. 1.5" groups on a good day at 100 yards with Rem Target rounds. Great rifle. I even shot a 6" group a few times at 200 with it. Good times. Some days I struggle for a 5" group at 50, but that's not the gun, that's me... trigger time cures that.

Sub-minute of angle with .22lr? What kind of ammo are you using? I find my .22's don't shoot better then 3-5 minutes. Mind you, I'm using bulk ammo.

At that point it ain't the ammo that is the problem. You need to chuck that rifle in the garbage and get something decent. My Valmet target rifle will produce 1/2 MOA 5-shot groups with hollow point hunting ammo all day no problem.

It really will depend on the rifle ammunition combination. Enough people have posted with good accuracy results from 10-22's that I have to believe they are capable of decent accuracy, although that hasn't been my personal experience. On the other hand, most of the rimfire manufacturers have at one time or another built good quality 22's. Remington, Winchester, Mossberg, Brno, etc have all built target 22's. Most barnyard Cooeys don't qualify, though I am sure that someone will chime in with their super accurate Model 39 shortly (and I have a Model 82 that I enjoy shooting very much). A good used Rem 37 Target, Win 52, or one of the others will allow you to take advantage of all the accuracy you can wring from a 22 without the expense of the expensive European brands. You will have to test the rifle with as many brands of 22 ammo you can find, and then buy a good supply of that ammo from the same batch. Once that batch is gone, you will most likely have to test over again. I have seen some amazing shooting from 22's on occasion. Keep in mind that in some ways, it is much more difficult to be accurate at LR (comparatively) with rimfires. FWIW - dan

Ammo cannot be overlooked, even in a good shooter. Even good quality high velocity ammo in my 2-E Brno has more than twice the group size of T22s. Try several brands and one will stand out.
