.22 target rifle

Marlin 925. Bed the action and get a gunsmith to do some work on the trigger. Mine (wearing an el cheapo fixed 4x scope) can hit 7.62x39 casings at 25 yards easily.

What kind of budget should a person look at for a decent target .22?

Thanks

Depends on what you want the outcome to be.

you can buy and sell old target rimfires and eventually, you will find a shooter. Likely the cost of the rifle will not be high as these are gunshow special. But the cost of testing will add up.

the least expensive CIL/anchutz I found was $50. Needed alot of TLC and a few parts but it shot very well when I was finished. Same went for a few Bruno #4's that Century Arms was selling for $100 or so.

all of these would shoot sub 1" at 100yds 5 rds with quality match ammo. Even had a norinco/CZ knockoff that shot very well - $120. I used these for smallbore silhouette years back.

Or you can go buy a new Anschutz, Walther or other top manf 22's. I have seen them well over $1000. The hunter class Anschutz were amazing rifles and were in the $1400 to 1700 range if memory serves me.

Or you can build one. Shilen has been rocking the rimfire BR world in the US for a number of years now and the barrels aren't anymore expensive then centerfire barrels.

Put on a quality action (lots to choose from), stock and tuning, the cost will be very similar to a full on centerfire rig and shoot amazingly well.

Ammo cost will be really high to get the most out of any of these rigs.

so it really depends on what the end use will be.

popping gophers at 150yds is a bit different then BR50.

to be honest, a top shooting rimfire will be a lot more money to create and feed then a center fire rig.

6mmBR.com has several full on BR50 rigs in the gun of the week section with excellent info on how they were built and set up. Very interesting tech and mucho $$$

A rimfire rifle doesn't have to cost a ton to be a decent performer. I went to a 200M .22LR match at Milcun on Sunday and the guy who came in 2nd was using an old 1962 (Israeli I believe) target rifle with SK Standard Plus ammo. Winner was using an Anschutz. I came in 3rd with a Quad sporting a Lilja barrel. The CZ 452 rifles that were there did quite well, and were always only a few points behind the high-end/custom rigs using the same ammo. Savages usually perform similar to the CZs.

+2 on the ammo

No matter what some posters in the rimfire section "evaluated", changing my ammo from bulk to SK Standard Plus made a HUGE difference.

Often I don't understand why some would spend $200 plus on a barrel and then shoot cheap ammo.

I love my CZ 452 Varmint. It has shot many sub minute groups with cheap federal/american eagle ammo. Gophers out to 175 on a calm day don't stand a chance. 200 yard shots are certainly possible if you have enough elevation adjustment in your scope.

Just picked up a Savage Mark II BTV at Bass Pro for $349.99, I believe it was the last they had in stock. Extremely nice rifle, the thumbhole stock is as comfortable and ergonomic as could be, the weight is well balanced, and the action is silky smooth. I just ordered some Nikon glass to mount on top of it, should be a shooter.

SK rimfire ammo

I am unfamiliar with the SK Standard Plus rimfire ammo suggested by previous posters. Or perhaps I do not recognize a short form? Can anyone supply additional detail. Thanks.

Hey, since we are on this topic anyone got a source for ELEY Standard Brown box ammo. It is the best shooting in my gun that I have found yet and I can't get anymore locally.

Oh, here is some ####.

I used 1" Dovetail Burris Signature rings with 20MOA and I have enough elevation for 300 yards and still get a 50 yard ZERO. bushy Elite 3200 5-15x40 is a great rimfire scope too btw. The crosshairs are a little on the thick side but it is nice and clear and the knobs are easy to adjust and I get a good feel for it so I can watch my shots and adjust as needed without loosing track of the target. I wish it had side AO mind you. Sub MOA at 100 is easy. I like to stand SKS brass at 100 yards as it is within the accuracy of the rifle to smack most times. Shot shells are too big for it at 100. I also upgraded the trigger with a YoDave trigger kit. makes the trigger feel like a million bucks.

For used bolt .22's, starting with the best, I'd go with
Anschutz
CIL/Anschutz
Brno
Savage
I don't have the space to get into all the model numbers, but it's a good guide
