I’m considering rebarrel or sleeving a .22 as a purpose built rifle for raccoon hunting. As a bit of a background I raccoon hunt at night with dogs and recently the regulations changed allowing any rimfire caliber to be used. That being said I’m partial to the norinco jw15a and the Steven’s 300f. Both are a magazine fed .22 LR with 13” factory barrels, this is particularly nice in the bush as it doesn’t get caught on brush constantly. Most shots are 30-40’ up a tree, I’m considering a caliber change as I think it’s a more ethical choice and for hide preservation. My questions are:
has anyone done similar and had rounds feed from the magazine well?
Would I be legal replacing the factory barrel with a 13” new barrel?
Sleeve or new barrel?
And how much of a PITA is it to her barrel liners brought in from brownells?
I already have a chamber reamer and a lathe/ knee mill in my shop to make things easier.
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated!
