22" vs 24"

What's the different in velocity and energy between the two barrels in non-magnum calibers? I see a lot of guns come with either or and I hear people emphesizing a large loss from the 22" (though I don't know about that one)

man 24" could be a nightmare for me i'm always hitting my 22" barrel on doors walls, bush and trees

in a non magnum caliber i don't think the differce would be more than 50 or 60 fps. in 308 the difference between a 20 and 22 inch barrel for me was under 50 fps. in the field nobody could tell the difference.

when I was planning my custom 260 I couldnt decide between 22 & 24 so I went with 23

A Handloader magazine recently ran an article describing Phil Sharpes test of a Springfield rifle with a extra long (36"??) barrel.

He cut it down, one inch at a time, and recorded velocities.

Velocities really didn't seem to drop much until he got below 17 or 18". In some cases they went UP between 25" to 22"

I'd say it makes no real difference. Even in most magnum catridges, a 2" difference in barrel length may not give you much extra loss/gain.
As Rembo said, it coudl be the same variation betweeen 2 identical barrels, same lenght.

The shorter barrell may have a bit louder report. Especially once you get down to 20" or so.

Gatehouse I read the same article. He cronied everyshot and kept records.
He also used 6 different factory ammos and 3 different weight if my memory serves me right. As you said they climbed a little between 25 to 22 and didn't really start dropping off bad till about the 18" mark. One thing else I belive he stated in the article is the rifle got progressively noisier, jeez wonder why?
Was this not done in the late forties or early fifties?

Depends on the powder as well...............slower burning powders will be more affected by shorter BBL lengths.....

There may be a slight drop in velocity and energy, but for practical purposes, it is not significant. I can say this has not made any difference whatsoever in my hunting success and I've hunted with barrel lengths ranging from 18.5 inches to 26 inches.
