22 win mag for coyote hunting

I have only been a member on this site for a short time and have been active on making new threads . Reason being this seems like a great site ( most are great people with lots of info ) I have the same interests and love talking about guns and hunting (I can talk about it all day) have been ever since I was a kid.

Sorry back to my thread (this is the one that really interests me ) lol one of my most favourite rounds is the 22 magnum I love it. It's like a 22 lr on steroids. Love the bang when shot. The accuracy immpecable.I was target shooting 50 yards and using 9mm empty shell to plink them off the two buy four.

I have a 597 remington bushnell 3x9×32 great scope. Its tough to make a semi with 22 win mag.power ( even ruger tried and failed ) and use it all the time with no issue , cycles like a dream and great to handle.

I have shot two grouse. Couple of snow showshoes but my favourite was a jack rabitt running full tilt at about 80 yards that I dropped with a back shot then finished him with a head shot. I was very impresive with the damage blew a nice thumbsize size hole right through him.with ease

Now some.guys where.pushing a drive and here comes this 50 pound coyote sprinting a million miles an hour about a hundred yard from me ( my dream shot ) bang bang bang bang bang bang nothingkeeps running without a issue and I did not find any blood. I'm usually very accurate with this gun but I could of missed. I do not hunt coyotes often and see them when it's usually rabbit hunting.

I have been reading a lot some people say that a 22 mag is great for coyotes up.to 120 yards.out. some say it's to small

Has anyone had any success with the fabulous 22 win mag and preditors.

Ther use to be old Lady in Toply BC she and her husband wear trappers
That old lady would shoot Coyotes of here hip with 22mag out 50 to 70 yards us Kids would try like crazy and never come anywhere close to being able to shoot of the hip
I still try once in a while and still can't do it Haahaa

If I am being completely honest the .22 win mag is not a good choice for a coyote caliber. Shot inside of 100yrds or 50 yrds would be best but even that, a coyote could still Go a long way. Coyotes have one of the most powerful wills to live you will encounter. A .204 is about the minimum I would hunt with if I wanted consistent coyote kills. JMO .....many will argue this but they would be fooling themselves. I have seen coyotes run long long distances after being hit by .270's. Now in saying that I have also seen them get hit by a 17HMR and be DRT! If the .22 WMR is all you have to hunt with it will kill em but expect some runners. Try to keep shots inside of 100yrds and I'm not condoning a head shot but that will likely provide the DRT effect you are looking for with your .22 WMR
 
From a commercial viewpoint, 22 magnum is THE gun to shoot coyotes with. Dad and Uncle's used to hunt coyotes for winters wages.
But the shooting as you described it, rapid and on a moving 'dog'... I'm not surprised it kept going. Could you even ascertain where you hit it?
And I agree about the 100 yards limit too, just not the ' Most powerful wills to live' thing. If they are aware of you, they will put to flight and can absorb a fair big round...the same as any animal ( including humans in some cases ) pumped full of adrenaline.
Jacked up and in full flight, they would seemingly absorb a fired bullet better than you would think.
 
Most of the dogs in the west are under 40 lbs. I shoot a fair amount of them with my 223 and a few in close with the 22 mag. I have no issue using the 22 mag under 70 yards if a good shot is presented. They usually tip over fairly easy. In the east where the coyotes are bigger I would think it is not such a good idea.
 
My guess if he was running "a million miles and hour" you were well behind him if your lead was not considerable at 100yds. A broadside, at a full tilt yote, at 100yds, with my 243 I am 2/3 of a horizontal crosshair in front. They can move a long way in that fraction of a second.

Million miles a hour maybe an exaggeration but dammit he was moving quick and covering ground so fast it's almost unbelievable. Probably missed him.
 
Depending on how fast they're running you may have to be 1 1/2-2 body lengths ahead to hit the mark. But that's the fun part of coyote hunting it a challenge to hit a coyote in full flight. Just be aware of beyond your target, safety first!
 
The problem lies ( and it really isnt a problem) with the Coyote being pushed and running full tilt while someone with a .22Mag Repeater tries to shoot him down .
Adding more incentive for Wile E Coyote to run just a little bit faster than the guy going pew pew pew with his thwacker stick (dam you kamlooky).

Shotgunning a running Coyote isnt really gonna work, but setting up and calling them in might be the ticket or waiting in a blind for an un-suspecting Wile E Coyote than the gun and round are capable.

Just requires more skill and persistence and all.

I've killed far too many trapped and snared coyotes with a .22 LR to believe that they are hard to kill with a good hit. Heart shot there is a couple second pause, then they just tip right over. Head shots make for messy skinning.

Having said that, when a coyote isn't conveniently staked to the ground or tied to a tree they can use those few seconds to cover a lot of ground. Poor hits with just about anything will often mean a lost animal unless you have snow. Even when they can't run anymore they can still hide.
 
I use the 22 mag when ambushing coyotes on frozen creeks. Shots are generally 30 yards or less but i've reached out a lot further. 30 gr Vmax tight behind the shoulder or to the base of the skull works. I let out a sharp whistle to get them to stop before I shoot generally. A 45 gr tmj flat nose works very well and does seem to expand leaving 1/2" exit holes on broadside shots.
I really like the 22 mag for what it is. To me it is not a coyote caliber unless used by a someone who knows it's limitations
 
A friend of mine has neen hunting coyotes for 40 years, he uses a .22 WMR bolt action rifle exclusively... he keeps his shots under 100 yards and has taken hundreds of yotes... mostly over bait piles... he doesn't loose animals.
