Now that Winchester has the 17 WSMRF is there a possibility that is will expand the cartridge to make it a 22 WSMRF.
What are your thoughts?
The Ruger 77 RF is now being produced ant there should be no issues changing the bbl.

I think it would be a great cartridge, and should be as good as the 22 Hornet.

That's true stubblejumper, but looking at the 17 HMR and the 22 WMRF the 22 is still more popular, (that being said a lot older as well) than the 17, I would wonder if a larger more powerful 22 rimfire would work providing a suitable rifle platform like the Ruger 77 or Savage B mag. were available.
It would certainly be an interesting cartridge for the rimfire crowd.
There is still a faithful following of Hornet shooters out there and a 22WSMRF might be just the ticket to trip the trigger for those that do not reload.

It is just a thought. If you build it will it sell? I think it would.

If you ask the people that own the stores selling rifles whether they sell more rifles in 17HMR, or 22WMR, I would bet that they sell far more rifles in 17HMR these days.

You'd have to push a new 22cal rimfire into 22cal centerfire territory for velocity to improve upon the .22wmr - and at that point you'll be spending near 223 prices/box for hard to find ammo and end with brass that is of no value above current scrap price.

Is there a possibility they'll do it anyways? Of course. I hope they do.

I think a 20 cal would do better.

I am not sure that the 20 cal would be any better than a 17 or 22.
It would be something else to try.
The big issue, that being a Rimfire, wildcatting is somewhat out of the abilities of some of us.

It would be nice if there was someone able to do some experimentation on this.
If there is any influential factory representatives out there....

I meant that a 20 might have better success than a 22. A 20 cal offers more velocity as it's a lighter bullet. Better BC for a even weight And it offers something different. A 22 rimfire faster than the old 22 mag is in the realm of the slower center fires.
A 20 cal rimfire although I highly doubt a major commercial success I believe it would fare better than a 22 version

brybenn,
You'r right, you should have more velocity with the 20. Looking at available bullet weights in 20 caliber it might be a good rimfire round. Lets get on the manufacturers and get a 204 WSMRF on the books.
It would be a bottleneck case as well.

Little Off topic, sorry.
Speaking of 22 hornet, I inherited about 150 rounds that were reloaded by my Dad's good friend before he died, wondering should I hang on to them in case I find a gun or let them go?

Not sure if anyone would buy reloaded ammo from a guy who's a friend of your dad.
As in, nothing against him or your dad, it's just a hard sell. If you have the load data used, powder, type, weight, ect.
Someone might be less concerned about buying reloaded ammo.

Personally, I think it's a reason to get a .22horent rifle. As a bonus, they don't seem to be a hard sell if you don't like it.

Back on topic,

A .20 rimfire would be interesting.

I'm glad I'm not alone with my craziness. Should be able to beat the old 5mm rimfire

Speaking of the 5mm,
Was the 5mm before it's time. Would it fly now? If Remington it back out would it sell?
Does anybody know if there is any ammo available for the 5mm.

David

Was given a 5mm Remington Rimfire round today (thanks Keith).
After comparing it to the other rimfire rounds I have it would make sense to make a 204 WSM Rimfire.
Using the higher pressure as per the 17WSM it should be a great round.

What are your thoughts.

David

Might sound good in theory, but how may manufacturers have embraced the .17wsm? How many are going to support another 'oddball' rimfire round? There are plenty of obsolete rimfire rounds for a reason.
