22 WMR for grouse

Majority of my grouse get shot with a 12g and #7.5 shot while on the ground or in a tree, I just head shoot them so not much for pellets in the meat. If you pattern your .410 you shouldn’t have a problem with head shots, a good buddy of mine head shoots them with a 22lr/.410 double badger. Pretty sure it’s got a fixed full choke.

My goto grouse gun is a 410 full choke #4 or #6 shot. The 22 also gets used sometimes but it's just not as versatile for multiple runners or heavier brush. 22wmr seems like overkill but I don't own one.... Yet.

A person can also shoot the 22 WRF ammunition instead of the 22 WMR. It’s a 45 grain bullet and quite a bit slower making it equivalent to a 22lr round. Use the full power load for larger stuff.

Being someone who has used a 9mmx19 on grouse as well as the 22mag they work fine with TMJ thru the head and neck or a shot thru the wing joints. Rarely have I lost breast meat with those shots. I only take open shots that I'm confident in making.
I prefer to shoot them on the wing with a scattergun but I've taken them with rifles when opportunity arises. Where I hunt they're so dumb you can walk up 20 yards from them and pop them in the head.
