I like the WMR. It's my favourite rimfire round. I've heard people say it's not that accurate, but I've never had any problems with accuracy. Maybe my firearms are just that good, or I've shot it for so long that I know what to expect and how to compensate? My LR's and my WMR's are the guns I will never give up. Both are fun and cheap to shoot. The HMR is nice, but I don't see all the reason for its hype. Perhaps if it were a little cheaper, I'd have a better appreciation for it. Finances is a reason I shoot rimfires alot, and the .17HMR isn't that good for finances when comparing the LR or even the WMR.
 
I have them both, WMR & 17HMR. In my personal experience, it may be a bit harder to find a super-accurate 22 WMR than it is to find one in 17HMR, but all other considerations favor the WMR. And there are 22WMR's out there that display astounding accuracy.....I have one. My vote goes to the WMR. Eagleye.
 
Matter of fact, I like them both. Very effective on all types of small games(big fat gophers) out to 100+/- meters on a kinda windy day (10-30km wind). The hit ratio is over 95%+ on both rds, using bull barrel and bolt action Savage rifles. Very impressive. However, if you plan to wack gophers all day long on almost every weekends...and the only brakes that you're taking are your lunch brakes and the times to allow for your barrel to cool-off...then you better use the 22wmr majority of the time, because...17 hmr is $$$

i've got two 17hmr's, but with the price of ammo lately i might be looking in to a 22 mag.
 
I like the 17 a lot, but I never just shoot it all day. I have a mighty fine rem model 5 in 22 mag that doesn't get to see very much action anymore, as the Cooper in MachII seems to get used first these days. I was fortunate enough to get my hands on several bricks of the 17 ammo a few years ago when you could get it for $100.00 for a brick and $50.00 for MachII. I always take the 22 mag with me and if there is some wind I might pull it out for some gopher action. Some of the longest rimfire shots I have ever made on gopher are with this rifle and CCI Maxi mags. FS
 
I don't have the 17 HMR. I have it's little brother the 17 mach2 in a Marlin semi. I also have a lever 22mag. I voted the 22mag. I have shot both the 17 HMR and the 22 mag lots. My hunting partner has a 17 HMR.
If the poll included the Mach2 then I would have voted that instead cause it is IMO the best rimfire round out there.
 
I would vote for both as I have both. The 17hmr is faster and flatter shooting but like everything else new the ammo cost more. The 22 being slower has more hitting power out to 100 yrds. They both have good side and bad side the 22 drop off really fast as the 17 goes further and straighter. The 22 is beeter in stronger winds as the 17 has a deflection of 8 inches or more after the winds hit 10 kph or more. The 17 is more devastating than the 22 but as I have said before the 22 hits harder out at 100 yrds. The 17 hits harder at 50 yrds than a 22. So it seems there are good and bad for both. Outside of the price the 22 is cheaper by far.

I had a highly customized Ruger 10/22 Magnum with a Volquartsen Snake Fluted Barrel (see pic below) and a Anschutz 1717 HB .17 HMR. Even with the .22 Magnum Remington V-Max ammo, it would group maybe 1" or 1.25" and 100 Yards.
The .17 HMR was easy to dial in, right out of the box with Hornady Ammo I was getting 0.75"-1" groups easily. And for gopher shooting, the .17 HMR V-Max ammo opened them right up, no walk off's or escaper's down the hole.

I think that if you can afford .22 Magnum ammo, then you can afford the $5 extra for the .17 HMR ammo which performs twice as good.

Even though it is a Highly customized 10/22magnum (great looking gun as well ) I dont think it is fair to compare its group size to the Anschutz in a 17hmr , 2 different actions ,2 different class rifles. If you compared an Anschutz in 22mag to an Anschutz in 17HMR the group comparison would be a little more valid .
I had 2 savages one in 22mag,one in 17hmr and both grouped Very well , on a calm day the 17 was a bit more accurate but not by much. Sold them both but still have a couple of other 22mags and a 17hmr .
I still prefur the 22mag

Very true. I could only give my 0.02$ based on what I have owned.:50cal:
 
I have a norinco .22mag and 3 .17's. 1 mossberg 817, 1 savage, and 1 nef. I really thought I'd enjoy a .17, and I do, but I still prefer the magnum. Shells for the .22 are a little cheaper and I usually don't go out further than 50yds for 'yotes or 150 for gophers, but both will expunge gophers easily.
