Just a note here, having been around a fair while (and my dad owned a .22 mag for 30 or 40 years befor I got it) did people ##### about the price of .22 mag ammo when it was 6 or 7 bucks (or more)a box compared to 2 or 3 $ for .22 ammo.I dont ever recall anyone complaining about the price difference just how much better the magnum was over the long rifle and now when a faster, flatter shooting round like the .17 comes along all we hear about is how expensive the .17 is to shoot. If we base performance on the price of the shells the ordinary .22 has them all beat.

My next purchase will be a HMR.

Here is the energy of our comparison loads, in foot-pounds at the muzzle, 50 yards, 100 yards, 150 yards (when available), and 200 yards (when available):

* .17 HMR, 17 grain V-Max = ME 245 ft. lbs., 185 ft. lbs. at 50 yards, 136 ft. lbs. at 100 yards, 99 ft. lbs. at 150 yards, 72 ft. lbs. at 200 yards.
* .17 HMR, 20 grain XTP = ME 250 ft. lbs., 187 ft. lbs. at 50 yards, 137 ft. lbs. at 100 yards, 99 ft. lbs. at 150 yards, 72 ft. lbs. at 200 yards.
* .22 WMR, 30 grain TNT = ME 325 ft. lbs., 200 ft. lbs. at 50 yards, 120 ft. lbs. at 100 yards, 80 ft. lbs. at 150 yards.
* .22 WMR, 40 grain JHP = ME 324 ft. lbs., 230 ft. lbs. at 50 yards, 162 ft. lbs. at 100 yards.

Depends on the use. Longer ranges, shooting at groundhogs (groundhogs are not gophers, and get up to 20+ lbs) then definitely a 22 WRM, unless you only use head shots.

You forgot to add stats for a CCI Stinger, 22 LR

What would be the better choice purely for plinking and target shooting? Most of the arguments here seem to revolve around energy delivered on target, but what about for someone like myself who just wants a rimfire for plinking?

I bought a Marlin 917 (.17 HMR) for plinking because I know for a fact that when I miss the target, I have only myself to blame.

It truly is a tackdriver (I've knocked the tacks holding my target up), and that means you can concentrate on your own personal shooting skills for cheaper than a centerfire.

My $0.02.

... The 17 is more devastating than the 22 but as I have said before the 22 hits harder out at 100 yrds.

...
...
And for gopher shooting, the .17 HMR V-Max ammo opened them right up, no walk off's or escaper's down the hole.

...

A good point to ponder. If you plan to eat what you're shooting (no, not gophers. I'm talking about rabbits, grouse, etc) the .22WMR will leave you more meat whereas the .17 will destroy a lot of what you otherwise would have put into the cook pot. Just a thought...

From what I understand there are better bullet options out there for the .17. Hornady XTP and CCI Gamepoint are both better options for taking larger game(coyotes) and reducing damage to small game.
