Hey. I know, I know, I know; 22 WMR is most expensive than its 22LR cousin. That being said, 22 WMR will be my first foray into the rimfire world, and will probably end up being my only dedicated rimfire. (IE: 22 conversion for AR)

All things aside, I'm looking for a decently priced 22 WMR for about $600, with taxes and shipping in. The purpose would be for small game hunting (going for the hunting papers this spring) and light target practise. As well, if possible, I'd like to have a semi-auto, but I'm not set on that.
If I remember right, the Stevens 305 is a 22 WMR bolt action. Is it still in production?

All things aside, what do you recommend for a 22 WMR rifle?

Edible small game? Maybe not a good choice.
Semi auto? Sort of thin on the ground. .22WRM isn't all that good a choice from the design standpoint, there have been some made, discontinued. Ruger, Marlin, H&R made them, you might be able to find one. Nicest ones I ever saw were the Brnos.
There have been slide action ones made, don't know if anything is current.
For lever actions, the Winchester 9422M and Marlin are dandies. I've always been partial to the 9422M.
Various companies have made bolt actions. Ruger, Brno, Savage, Mossberg, Marlin, Anschutz.
Most of the commonly available current production bolt actions, like the Savages, are OK, if uninspiring rifles.
.22WMR is a sort of specialized rimfire, not all that good an all around rifle.

Nothing wrong with 22wmr for small game hunting providing your not reaching out past 100yrds. I've used my Savage 93FVSS bolt action for hunting over the last 6yrs and the game never complained about and neither did I with it's performance. There are better rifles out there from what I have read, CZ being the best for accuracy from what I remember. I use nothing but CCI Maxi Mags in mine and they perform the best for all around shooting, and Hornady VMax for the rascally wabbits.

Well, my only .22WMR experience is with the one I bought last spring, and it's been a good rifle for me. I bought it for groundhog-hunting and it does a fine job of that inside of 100 yards. I struggle with whether or not to replace the stock (which is crappy on these entry level Savages) and have pretty much decided I'm going to. Here is mine;

If I were looking at what to buy today in .22WMR, I'd be looking at Savages and Marlins. I'm really impressed with the accuracy of my latest rimfire, and it's a semi-auto Marlin 795. (.22lr only) No plans to change TO a Marlin from the Savage for me though.

In terms of how "useful" a .22WMR is, I think it should be said that too many die-hard .22lr shooters like to count ammo costs in pennies. Too many pennies=not good. :) It's part of the reason there is allot of "bulk-pack" and "high capacity magazine" talk around this forum. I'll also say that for every shotgun and centerfire round I shoot in a year, I probably put 150-200 rounds of .22lr down the pipe, I love my .22s! They are cheap fun, everyone should shoot them allot, period. As for the .22lr's usefulness compared to .22WMR in a hunting scenario~I don't think there is a comparison. If you only want one rimfire, and that gun might see a fair bit of hunting action, the .22WMR kills better than .22lr without question. The only exception might be really small, squirrel-sized targets. A body shot with a .22WMR might not leave you much. I don't worry about ammo costs with my .22wmr but then again, if I want to shoot pop cans and paper all day...I'll be bringing my .22lr instead. Most times. :)

I can't reccomend any semi .22 WMR rifles, but if a bolt gun is ok a CZ 452 or 455 would be my choice in your price range. Savage and Marlin make perfectly serviceable rifles too, they just aren't as pretty and feel cheap in comparison.

P.S. What part of eastern Ontario? I have three 452s you could have a gander at, just south of Ottawa.

Get a Marlin 925M mine cost me 250$ with taxes. Came with beatiful laminated stock
and I added a 50$ scope.

I second this. My 925M does 1" MOA at one hundred yards. I was getting decent groupings at 236 yards as well. Good rifle, fired hundred upon hundred of rounds through it and still is a tack driver. I stick to CCI ammo now. Winchester Super X is not bad for groupings and kills for small game like grouse and hare but I find 1 in 4 doesnt fire.

CCI ammo is good quality. Another reason I like magnum ammo over LR is the quality.

Very nice, I haven't tried anything longer than a 100yds with my Savage. I could make consistent head shots on a gopher target (8x14 Paper) at that range ... and all with CCI. The Hornady do the same but the price I pay for them I'd rather shoot the CCI for plinking :D

Thanks for all the info. I'm liking the look, price and quality of the Savage 93FVSS from Cabelas, although I'd prefer to buy from a site sponsor...
Do any sponsors carry the Savage 93FVSS? Or am I stuck with Cabelas?

Has any one had any experience with the marlin mag fed semi auto in 22 mag, I've heard that they were one heck of a semi auto, word was they were built on the camp carbine frame?
