220 g. Round nose .308 ?

220 in a 308 is a waste of time of time
Velocities will be to low for that bullet to perform
As its suppose to, in 30-06, you can reach 2500fps
In some of my older manuals here, all calling for slow
Powders, 308 works best with faster powders
Like H335, H322, BL-C2,H380, all work gd with bullets
Up to 180 grains, I have a savage 110S in 308
Best bullets were 165 and lighter
In my opinion, if you want brush buster loads for 308
Use a 180gr round nose and a Dose of H380 powder
At 100
Yards I got MOA accuracy and plenty of knock down power
The OP is not looking for "brush buster" he wants a "bush gun". There's a difference.
He is also looking for a round that will perform magically at short ranges. When you are pushing bush, ranges are short but you want HARD hits.

Too slow for the bullet to perform?? I am not sure how people come by this logic. A 220gn rd traveling at 2200fps at 100yds is the same as a 220gn rd traveling at 2200fps at 400yds. (It's not like velocity remains at a constant 2800fps in a 300WM from the muzzle to the target 600yds away.) They both will hit with an excess of 1500ft/lbs of energy. And I guarantee that the CorLokt bullet will expand at that velocity, no matter how far from the muzzle it is when it achieves it.

Whereas, that 180gn round you are running hits with 200ft/lbs LESS energy. It would still work, but the OP wants better.

If you want a gd bush load for 308 with a round nose
I use the 150 designed for the 3030, with a load of
44gr of H4895, hits around 2680-2700fps, sub MOA
At 100 yrd out of my savage 110S, recoil is almost
Nothing, with the bullet having a lighter jacket
The expansion will be fast and dependable
That would be a definite good round. Flat front would give a large frontal area and that light jacket would perform well.

Yep, good round.

I think that there are better bullet choices for the 308, but that's not to say that you can't or shouldn't use them if you happen to have a bunch on hand. You could probably load them up with RL17 or N550 and get very good performance out of them.

I did some experimenting with 220's in a .308 a while back... best I got was just under 2300 in an 18 1/2" barrel. I haven't done any further testing because the RL 15 I was using became unobtainium, and what I have left is reserved for my 9.3x62.

I doubt the performance on game would be appreciably better than a good 180 gr.
