220 Swift for coyotes

Any ideas what would be a fur friendly bullet if there is such a thing

Lorne; I have used the Swift to slay coyotes for many, many years, and it's always an "iffy" situation. A couple of bullets that I have had success with staying inside a coyote are the Speer 52 grain HP and the Sierra 50 grain Blitz. Here are the problems, though. The 52 Speer has a rather large opening, which means the BC is not as good as many other 50-53 HP's
The Sierra Blitz occasionally comes apart in the air at Swift velocities. Almost any bullet will sometimes exit a Coyote broadside. If your shot is Quartering or head on, even the 50 Ballistic tip will often stay inside. I even tried 55 grain FMJ's a number of years ago before they became taboo in BC. and I found they often left exits as big as expanding bullets unless you lowered the velocity a fair bit, and AFAIAC, high velocity is what the Swift is all about. If I want to launch .224 projectiles at lower velocities, I will shoot my 222 Remington, or even my 22 K-Hornet. Regards, Eagleye.

50 gr vmax should work unless you hit shoulder, then it might splash and tear em up

No, but we still have a pile of Varminators we load for coyotes. That's a 58 gr in a .243 and at longer ranges, they tend to stay put. Hole in, quite often no hole out but a very dead coyote. If they exit, it's usually not good.

I have loaded up some 85 grain TSX in 6mm that I want to try on coyotes. I don't think they will hurt the pelt much at all. Barnes makes a 45 grain .22 I think.

I shot yotes with a Remington VSSF in a 220 Swift one winter with 55 gr. V-Max and it was not any harder on fur then my 22-250 and .223
If I were to worry about fur Id shoot the 52 gr. HP by Speer or Berger but who really cares... furs are worth zero these days from what i here.

My buddy has been shooting the Speer 52 gr HP's for years with his 22-250 he tells me that he has never had an exit with one of these bullets on coyotes or wolves.

A couple years ago when we dropped off my wolf that I had shot with my 22-250 and 60gr Sierra Varminter to a guy that skins for my buddy he wasn't home so we just put the wolf on his skinning table.

A couple days later when we came back the guy said to my friend "I new it wasn't your wolf because there was an exit hole"...

Yep he swears by them...

I didnt say it wont work, it just drifts more in the wind and drops faster than a ballistic tip

Oh, good. I thought my problem was unique to me & my Swifty and/or load. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't hit the paper at 100 yds, until I tried 25 yds. I was shooting about improved cylinder, it seemed....

When I tried some older Sierras with soft point instead of plastic, they held together fine with same load. Left a big exit hole in the coyote, though.

When I had a swift I used hornady 55gr sxsp loaded as hot as I could. Almost never had an exit hole, but did have the bullet come apart the odd time. The bullets are designed for lower velocities but they worked great for me.
