220gn 30-06

Thought about this a lot myself as well. We don’t seem to discuss short range bullets much. What I want in a short range bullet is much different then long range or even a 10-350 yard bullet.

When you can see the whites in the eyes of your target BC dosent matter but SD sure does.

Round nose bullets are IMO already expanded to caliber upon impact and start expanding sooner, have the mass of the bullet much more evenly distributed which sure can’t hurt straight line penetration almost like putting a bullet in 4wd.

Anyone tried the 200gr Lapua mega RN? Or is it best to stick with Sierra and Hornady?

Not a 30-06 fan, by any stretch. A long seated heavy for calibre round nosed bullet, in any classic cartridge, just looks like the business.
And delivers the same.

R.

Definitely a vibe there. I love 215s in .303B and will build an -06 sooner or later to join the club with my brother. I will definitely be loading 220s right away.

Arguably yes.

But……. At 3 dollars plus a bullet Nosler can stick them up there *** till the nose fragments and the base drives right on through……

Good bullets without a question but Hornady Sierra Speer Barnes Lapua and Norma didint triple there prices as of the latest shortages……
I always ran my Marlin dry never had a problem. Easy with gloves and just carried so nice.
Do you use a little powdered graphite after degreasing?

Late to the game but 200 and 220 grain Nosler Partitions maybe moving slower than the next caliber up a notch, but do they hit hard and penetrate well, with not a lot of meat loss. They're not for LR or speed demons but for 200 yards and in from a 30-06 they do just fine on pretty much what North America has to offer. My preference is using them with iron sights...kind of like an up close and personal sort of thing. Remington Cor-loc's and Hornady Interloc's are ok but not like the Nosler's imho, but are a bit cheaper to shoot. Nosler 200 grain Accubonds are decent as well and have some punch. Glad to hear there's a few others interested in the '06 and trying heavy for caliber bullets.

Not the '06, but I've done some pondering on how 196/200 grain 8x57 loads will perform as well as the lauded 358 win. Might be the same story for 220s but don't quote me on that

My 8x57 and 8mm06 use 200gn bullets, 200gn accubond for the 8x57 got me a nice young bull moose 2 years ago and the 200gn hot cor in the 8mm06 a black bear last spring!

I have to admit after reading this thread i kinda have an itch to buy and load some up. Curious what recoil is like. I've never shot anything above a 180gr in my 06. I have shot 350gr and 550gr out of a 458win mag so can't be worse than that I guess.

Got to like those round noses bullet

More of a push than a punch. I’m running them in some old REM 700’s with still the original metal butt plates…manageable, but not for everyone…recommend at least a 1/2 recoil pad to take some of the itch off the shoulder. Benching 200 and 220 will wake you up though but in field conditions don’t really notice…similar to a hot 180. No need for a break in my opinion but I’m already hard of hearing lol.
