Does anyone have any good 30-06 loads using 220gr bullets. I want to load some of these for Bear hunting. I realize that the 180's will do the job but I would just like to try something different. Thanks.

220 gr. - Hawk RNSP, 55.0 grs. RL22, CCI 200 ~ 2385 fps

thats a load I have shot in a 24" Huskavarna

I would think them 220's would put an awful hurt on a bear out to 200 yards or so :D

Not a 220g load, but I have a good 200g load for my 06 and it hits very hard as well. I'm using 200g Speers behind 58g of 4831 with WLR and an O.A.L. of 3.260 in my Winchester Featherweight. It clocks 2660 over my chrony, this is a max load for my rifle so load accordingly. I get about 4 loads with rem brass and then the necks split. I can't tell you whether the powder is IMR, or Hodgdon, I bought about 3lbs of it a show many years ago. I'm guessing IMR, because of the shape of the can, but it is labelled barotto sports calgary and has 4831 written on it in felt pen? The load shoots between 1-1.5" and has worked well for me, I was going to try Nosler Partitions in the same weight, but never got around to it.

Good luck, Homesteader

To me I would think H-4350 might be worh while looking at?
I tried them in my A-Bolt with fairly accurate results in win cases and speer bullets.
Lee data shows 50 to 53.2 gr of H-4350
and I used 51.8 gr for mine however never hunted with them. I also never Chron them so I do not Know the Vels.

I have two -

56.5 gr. of RL22 /Win. brass/ CCI LR primers / 220 Nosler Partitions
and
55.5 gr. of IMR 4831 /Rem. brass/ CCI LR primers / 220 Sierra R.N.

Both give remarkable accuracy in several rifles.

Homesteader; I believe what you have is H4831, since 58 grains of IMR 4831 behind a 200 grain bullet sounds a bit warm to me! I use 58 grains of Norma MRP behind the 200 Partition in my rifle, and that is a max working load. It graphs just on 2700 and that powder is slightly slower burning than is H4831. ZuluMike: With your 220 grain bullets, I would try H4831 or Reloder 22 for best velocities. Most 24" 30-06 rifles will make 2500+ with the 220 and a good charge of slow burning powder. Regards, Eagleye.

You could try a Barnes Original 250 gr bullet. Shot a couple of moose with those and they hit hard. Think I used H4831.

Make a point of avoiding the Hornady 220 grainers. I worked up a load a few years ago in an '06 that I had at the time. The penetration was no better than my buddy's .308 firing 165 grain Hornady spitzer. Also, the 220s were coming apart so badly that the 165s were actually retaining more weight. I don't really care for retained weight as a bullet performance statistic but it does show how badly they were breaking up when a bullet that started out 55 grains lighter was finishing with more weight.

To me the Hornady 220 grain bullet is a totally pointless bullet. Having said that, if I'd kept the rifle longer I may well have tried different 220 grain bullets because I still think the idea is a good one.

Incidentally what I did settle on was a 200 grain Speer that was a lot faster, more accurate and far penetrated better.

A friend of mine uses nothing but 220 gr partitions with IMR 4350 and CCI 250 magnum primers in his 22" barrelled 30-06. He used the rifle on a big Woods Bison a few years ago and decked it with two shots in the lungs. That is really saying something, as they are very hard to put down.

He gets right around 2500 fps with this load and moose don't have a chance inside 200 yds or so.

Heavy 06' loads

I have tried some Barnes original 250 grain loads with H 4831 SC 50 grains starting load with CCI 200 and they seemed to be stout enough for anything that you may hunting for. I have also picked up some Sierra gamekings 200 grains that were highly recommended for big game hunting with the 06'.Regards

I shoot the 220's in my 06 with 56.5 grains of IMR 4831 and they chronied out at 2511. Good , very good bear medicine. Good for you , bad for bear......:D

Jeese that's a bit hot 303carbine! IMR's website lists a 220 gr. bullet with 54.0 gr. of IMR 4831, with a velocity of 2438 fps and a chamber pressure of 57 200 psi. You must be at 60 000 psi or better there bud.

06 loads

I worked these loads up in my Winchester Classic very carefully, there is no signs of high pressure in my rifle and the empties go right back into the rifle with no sticky extractions. The primers still have the radius and there is no cratering. I would not go any higher because this load works good as is. Your rifle will probably be different....:)
