Hi All,

If you needed to buy a new un-chambered CrMo .222 Rem sporter barrel blank (1 in 14 -- 6 groove .224), where would you go? My CZ rimfire experience says Lilja... but I don't have centrefire experience to support that...

It's more about wanting the project than anything... All I need is a finish reamer and I'm good to go. I'm not after competition benchrest accuracy.... At least not yet.

Is somebody going to tell me to go 1 in 12? 60gr bullets do sound appealing.... (but that's when I should take the 6.5 Swede instead)..

Thanks!

I looked it up and the Scirocco are made in 62 and 75 grain, Berger goes up to 90 grain in the target and 64 grain in a varmint bullet. Berger's 75 grain calls for an 8 twist. Don't say s*it it's always good to find a reason for another gun :)

I'm not sure a 75 gr bullet would make it out the end of a 222.... come to think of it. This is turning the 222 into something it's not.... the .223 -- my least favourite cartridge.

I was reading about 1 in 12 with a 60gr .222 being a great 100yard small deer gun... but really, I would leave it in the safe and look for bigger 200yard deer.

Anyway... I got some interesting advise about Green Mountain barrels.... Inexpensive... button-rifled... non-profiled. Is there anything wrong with turning a 1.2" barrel down to sporter profile?

In my 222's I used 55 grain Bergers with great success. Their site calls for a 14 twist with these, the 60's requiring a 12 twist. We can't use anything under .23 caliber for hunting big game here so it is for coyote, well small game and targets. I was looking at the 75 grain for a different project.

I don't think there would be an issue, they all start as a piece of rod and get turned down to your specified profile anyway.
