222 pet loads needed

I dunno, everything I cook up seems to shoot well under an inch with my 788. Normally I use re-formed Winchester .223 brass, 24.0 gr of surplus WC-735 powder from Higginsons and Federal match primers with 40 grain Nosler BTs or Hornady VMAXs for about 3550fps

Hmmm - no one's mentioned H-322 yet? 322 and the 222 used to go hand-in-hand on the benchrest circuit a few years back

It works well...cant remember my loads but I know 20gr IMR 4198 and a 50gr bullet was hard to beat.

Also 25.7gr BLC-2 and a 45 gr shoots real real well in my Savage 340.

I use Fed205M and CCI BR primers and win brass.

23.6gr H335
Speer 50gr TNT
WSR primer
Shot from BSA Hunter works well for me.
Ken Waters "Pet Loads" summarizes the most accurate loads as:
22.8 & 23.2 N-201 (Norma); 22.0 & 22.5 IMR 3031; 19.5 & 20.0 Reloader 7; 20.0 HP-103 (Herters); 20.5 & 21.0 4198; 23.0 of Win 748; 24.5 of 4320.
He states that if restricted to a single powder it would be between N-201 and IMR 3031.
As I can't find Norma powders I'll be trying 3031 when my H335 runs out.
I have found that some powder mfrs recommend a small rifle magnum primer so double check various reload manuals for the primer type.
Hope this is helpful; Ken

mikeelliot: could you pass on some of your 3031 loads? and what is your opinon of 3031 in terms of accuracy & performance? Thanks, kfn

I had good results from 25grs of BLC-2 in win brass, with a small rifle magnum primer and the 50gr v-max. I just shot it over the chronie on the weekend and it was averaging 3325 fps. Almost 100fps over what the manual said. It is very accurate(sub moa) and it puts a whole lotta hurt on yotes and gophers out to 250-300 yards.
